In 1966 Jimmy Webb met Johnny Rivers, who was about to start his own label within the Liberty Records family. Rivers signed a group called Strawberry Children, and Webb gave them a song. It’s not all that good, and Webb’s arrangement is too busy. It was not an auspicious start for Webb in Rivers’ company, but that was about to change.

Strawberry Children: “Love Years Coming”

This song was written by Eden Ahbez in 1947. Ahbez was literally the first hippy.

IIRC, in the late 60's or therabouts Richard Harris released an album of Jimmy Webb songs. MacArthur Park, among others.

Up to this point, Johnny Rivers had been re-recording rock classics from the Fifties, but now he was about to try some new material. Webb wrote his first truly great song for a Rivers album.

Johnny Rivers: “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”

Wait what???

I always thought that was a Glenn Campbell original.

Rivers recorded it first, then Campbell. Webb wrote it.

I think we're going to have some major surprises tonight at the Canteen.
