Johnny Rivers let Jimmy Webb write all the songs for the next Fifth Dimension disk, The Magic Garden, and its a kind of concept album, an idea that became hot after Days of Future Passed and Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.
According to accounts of the time, Carpet Man is supposed to represent the advice given to Webb by his friends about Cynthia. It was a successful single.
The Girls Song was another successful single. The classical composer Sergei Rachmaninov was a master at the art of tonal misdirection, and its the unifying idea behind his Piano Concerto #2. Here Webb provides an introduction that doesnt prepare the listener for the key in which the song begins. Its a brilliant stroke.
So Cynthia married someone else. Watch the key change at 1:26 with the middle eight, and the chords he uses at A woman like you needs a house and a home to get back to the original key. Its magnificent writing. (I couldnt find the album version, but someone was kind enough to post the single version and cut it off before the group segued into Laura Nyros Wedding Bell Blues.)
Another successful single.
