Last Friday, Rev. Robert Jeffress, the Dallas pastor who introduced Gov. Rick Perry at the Values Voter Summit, spoke derisively about the Mormon faith of Mitt Romney, making the case that Mormonism is a cult. Two days later, he chided Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism as false religions.
Last year, Rev. Jeffress said the Roman Catholic Church was the outgrowth of a corruption called the Babylonian mystery. He continued, Much of what you see in the Catholic Church today doesnt come from Gods word. It comes from that cult-like pagan religion. Isnt that the genius of Satan?
Catholic League president Bill Donohue offered these remarks today:
Where did they find this guy? When theological differences are demonized by the faithful of any religionnever mind by a clergymanit makes a mockery of their own religion. Rev. Jeffress is a poster boy for hatred, not Christianity.
I heard an interview with CBN and Perry said the same thing. The interview was during the Value Voters Conference. So the spin against Perry is shallow, lame, and actually stupid. When you have to dig up and put lies out...says to me they can’t find anything worthy against Perry.
If he's anything like the anti-Catholic FReepers we encounter every day (and what I used to be like), he's so certain of his position that he feels he has the right to impose it on the rest of us. Obviously, he doesn't think he's bearing false witness (but we know otherwise).
My old pastor used to express pride in how he'd refuse to attend prayer events that included Catholics.
What, illegal immigration isn’t a worthy issue?
All we're asking is for loud-mouthed bigots to keep their own religious dogmas out of political debates.
I don't happen to be Catholic either, but I have a great deal of respect for Pope John Paul II and what he did to help bring down the Iron Curtain along with Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. That is not the work of a Satanic cult, that is the work of a good and decent Christian leader doing what is right.
Jeffress will never amount to a pimple on the Pope's rear end.
Yeah, this means precious little to me, actually. His stance on tuition for children of illegals, however...
Thanks. I just listened to it. It’s pretty inaucuous stuff until he gets to 1:15. That short statement is one I strongly agree with. I’d have to verify the rest.
Unfortunately, this is a small sound bite. I’d like to either hear one of his sermons where he gets to the particulars or read one of his articles that does the same.
Jeremiah Wright is not alone in what he says, either. Both of them, along with their followers, pervert and distort the Word of God.
May God grant them the grace of repentance and conversion. Right now, they are mired in falsehood.
“If he’s anything like the anti-Catholic FReepers we encounter every day (and what I used to be like), he’s so certain of his position that he feels he has the right to impose it on the rest of us.”
Really? Is Jeffress or any other Protestant on here trying to use the government to make Roman Catholicism illegal or to take away the civil rights of Roman Catholic citizens?
Maybe Pastor Jeffress loves Jesus above all, and his rejection of various faith traditionss is a clumsy expression of the primacy he places on Jesus.
My passion for exalting the Savior Jesus above all — over Rome (and over St. Teresa, Joseph, and Fatima; check out the taglines above) — leads some to consider me kinda wacko.
(”Take Joseph as my master”? No, I’ll take Jesus as my master. “Live the message of Fatima”? No, I’ll live the message of Jesus.)
I’m not necessarily defending Jeffress. I’m just noticing some people are demonized because they promote faith in Jesus at the expense of others. And certainly Perry shouldn’t be rejected because of his passing affiliation with Jeffress.
Please read carefully: he believes he has the right to get in our faces and tell us how many ways our religious beliefs lead us to hell. He’s not concerned with whether we want to hear it, or have asked his opinion. He’s gonna give it to us anyways. I used to be that kind of witness. No wonder I wasn’t successful at drawing people to Christ. “You’re wrong and your pagan religion is leading you straight to hell” is hardly a winsome approach, no?
(Take Joseph as my master? No, Ill take Jesus as my master. Live the message of Fatima? No, Ill live the message of Jesus.)
It's common courtesy to ping the person when you talk about them. Maybe the courage is lacking.
Considering that Michelle Bachmann got a pass for her long-time membership in a church which teaches that the pope is the anti-Christ, there seems to be a double standard here—this isn’t the pastor of the church Perry attends.
He used this excuse after a poor performance in one of the earlier debates. What's his excuse this time?
Jeffress is irrelevant.
Why is everyone making a big deal of this man, thereby trying to taint the reputation of a Republican presidential candidate?
(FWIW, seeing the Roman Catholic Church as a corruption of biblical/historical Christianity is not a fringe belief.)
///
you say he’s irelevant,
and then, your “FWIW” immediately shows it is VERY relevant!
...you are correct, it is not a “fringe” belief. or limited to Southern Baptists. Bachmann’s church has very similar beliefs about Catholics.
so, it is VERY possible, that Perry has the SAME beliefs as Jeffress.
THAT is what the $64,000 question is.
and, will Perry have the courage to admit it.
(especially after all his praising Islam, and quoting the Quran, and signing halal meat bills to cut the throat of animals in Allah’s name. ...NOT the actions of a true evangelical in my book.)
If Perry is a man of integrity, and admits his believes, and especially, if he renouces Islam as the true enemy of Christianity it is... then, i will vote for him !!!

...i will vote for ANY candidate, who will stand up for that 12 year old girl, and others like her, and the Christians who are being burned out of their homes and churches all over the Muslim world.
but the ONLY candidate to criticise Islam, is Cain.
NOT “evangelical” Perry.
You have made the first plausible defense of Perry so far on this thread, and you are to be commended for being reasonable. Still, I think he'll have to speak up, just as Bachmann did (if memory serves).
—Jeremiah Wright is not alone in what he says, either.—
I don’t see the correlation. Billy Graham was not alone in what he said. Josef Stalin was not alone in what he said.
—Both of them, along with their followers, pervert and distort the Word of God.—
I understand how Wright does. How does Jeffries? I’ve only been exposed to a few brief comments. To me, they don’t qualify as perverting or distorting the Word of God.
I didn’t realize Jeffress was an illegal immigrant.
