I am here on duty in a Combat Support Hospital in Afghanistan. The bad guys have let up they are more active at night. I try to keep abreast of what is going on back at home. I got to thinking about how things have changed during my 4 decades of wearing the cloth of the nation in three branches of our great military (80's, 90's,00's and 10's). The nature of warfare has not changed since the caveman. You kill them before they kill you and kill enough until they capitulate or surrender. There is nothing beautiful or glorious about war. It is a barbaric undertaking but is it something that is unfortunaly common and necessary. Despite what people in the media and other places say this war was necessary and purposeful. My job here is to take care of the treause of this nation that have been wounded in battle. Believe me we provide outstanding care on par if not better than any trauma center back home. I have a personal stake in this because they are my brother's and sisters in arms. This place is ugly, stark, filthy and has no redeeming quality but we are here because we all swore an oath to the consitution. That great piece of paper that was ratified in 1787 is why I am here. I gave my word to the people of the United States that I would protect them and keep them safe from all enemies foreign and domestic. I will if I have to give my life for that oath. I have teenagers working for me and they are an outstanding group of professional young men and women. We have your back America I just want you to know that. We are watching what you are doing and trust me we want you working and going about your business without the fear of some entity attacking you. I want to personally thank all the FReepers here, I saw you all when I was working at Walter Reed and came out and met some of you. I have seen you at the airports welcoming us back home and giving of yourselves to the nation. I had Freepers at my wedding as well, I am hoping to be home so I can go to CPAC as well. Most of all I want to get back home to my wife and daughters. I want to thank them for their sacrifice as well. Family members of the military bear an incredible burden and my wife is exceptional. I salute her and all military families.

I am indebted to you for your service to our country and to keeping my family free.
Thank you.
I have said a prayer for your personal safety and the safety of all your comrades. We have the best military in history, and you have given us another example why.

God Bless you for your service to this great nation!
You are a hero; many who spend their lives in abject pursuits of happiness have no idea of your sacrifice.
Sleep well tonight, soldier. There is a remnant that understands, and supports you!

All the best to you and the rest of our amazing servicemembers. My elder daughter’s fiance is in the marine corps and just shipped out today to A-stan. He’s a driver in the infantry and will be doing a 7-month tour.
To all military personnel - active, reserves and post-service - I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You truly are heroes. Be safe, do good things, come home and thrive.

Thanks for your report. You really made my day.
Your post makes all the political bickering on this site seem inconsequential. We need to keep our focus on what is really important.
