President Barack Obama on Tuesday hailed the end of the policy banning gays from serving openly in the armed forces, as the Pentagon vowed "zero tolerance" for harassment of homosexuals in the military.
"Today, the discriminatory law known as 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is finally and formally repealed," Obama said in a statement. "As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love."
The repeal went into effect on Tuesday, ushering in a new era in the armed forces. The law had allowed gay men and women to serve in the military only if they kept their sexual orientation a secret. They faced the threat of being kicked out of the military if they were open about their homosexuality.
Obama last December signed legislation to repeal the policy known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which had been passed by Congress and signed into law in 1993 under then-President Bill Clinton.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta made it clear that the military would not tolerate mistreatment of gays in the ranks.
"This is an historic day for the Pentagon and for the nation," he said. "We have a zero tolerance with regards to harassment," Panetta told a Pentagon briefing.
Under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, more than 14,500 service members were thrown out of the military since it went into effect in 1993, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. (See graphic r.reuters.com/vaj83s)
Gay rights groups for years denounced the law and called its end a important milestone in the fight against anti-homosexual discrimination. Some have compared its demise to the integration of the armed forces.

Today was a very dark day in our nation’s history. One of its worst.
I have heard objections in terms of having to shower with homosexuals, but I keep insisting the problem really begins when showers, hot food, and regular sleep fade into memory to be replaced by brutality, chaos, and trauma. The leadership and discipline of a sub-culture that enables survival in those environments cannot be turned on and off. It must continually penetrate throughout the military services. A mental disorder involving sexuality when thrust into the midst of that totalitarian structure warps the relationships that must be maintained. My son finished his service in the Marine Corps in 2007. Today I would discourage him.
ARRGGHH!! My son just enlisted in the Air Force Reserves a couple months back!!! And he’s definitely NOT homosexual!!!
His agenda marches on....
And what about zero tolerance for gay officers & gay enlisted men/womaen hitting on non-gays, or threatening their careers unless they "submit" to sexual coercion or blackmail? Huh? Looks like the deck is stacked in favor of gays being able to harass & intimidate & coerce non-gays with complete abandon. May they all go straight to everlasting hell -- RAT bastard demoRATs / Rinos / 0dumb0 / Sec Gates & all the other bastards who are destroying our military & subjecting our overwhelming NON-gay men & women to harassment & abuse.
The keyboard soldier does not work in real life.
They deleted a lot of shit out of the regs. We were sent official orders yesterday.
They are not going to keep statistics on how many homos are serving. We will never know but I doubt that there are 60K in that the homos claim.
Actually, the American people are pleased with this; according to a recent poll, 75 percent of the American people are “gay-friendly” and “tolerant.”
No, the American people believe in “fairness” at all costs.
They get booted. They have all the facts available online about the assaults and who is doing it. They include all the info.

The polls were flawed. I’m sure if they asked mostly homos they would get the results they wanted. Bottom line is the freaks gave Zero money to help his election bid and now he’s paying them back.
The push for sissyfying the military comes from non-military politicains, pandering for votes, and/or, sex deviates themselves.
NO real military-experienced veteran has any tolerance for sex deviates, and the introduction of women into the military overall, was the first mistake, and the start of the slippery slope.
Word will get around. If the aren’t many coming “out” or a bunch do, it will get attention.
I was in back in the 70s and 80s and even then, the homo-nazis were at it. We had young female recruits going to their duty station at NAB Jax and being “hit on” in the women’s barracks - we had to get them the hell out of there ASAP. Disgusting...
As a nation and as a military, we are doomed...
now lawsuits from these homosexuals have started saying they should not have been kicked out and how they were going to do 22 years service and they want back pay etc.
This is total B/S.
FIRST THING IS OVERTURN THIS LAW and I fear Romney nor Perry has the balls to do it.
Romney will just say he sees no problems have come out of this while ignoring many problems
Hussein is looking for a gay bounce to offset, replace and obscure tomorrow’s “unexpected” unemployment data.
