Charles Rangel on Rick Perry: 'Tall and he's from Texas' (crashes Perry's Harlem luncheon talk)

Rick Perry scrambled for cash in upper Manhattan at what was supposed to be a quiet fundraiser with Hispanic businessmen - and instead turned into a local New York City political circus, replete with a gatecrashing appearance by Rep. Charles Rangel.

The event, which was coordinated by local Hispanic activists and New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers head Fernando Mateo, was half fundraiser and half meet-and-greet at a restaurant in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Continue Reading

Perry's people had expected the event to stay off record, including from any publicity. But instead, a media throng awaited Perry as he dodged into the restaurant to the waiting group at Papasito Mexican Grill of a couple dozen businessmen - and Rangel, who had waltzed in earlier.

"I wanted to make him feel comfortable," Rangel told reporters about his visit to an enemy camp event, which was held in his district.

"He's a statesman and we won't turn anyone away," said Mateo of Rangel, though he at least appeared less than pleased to see the congressman.

Rangel stayed for several minutes, telling reporters on his way out that he had shown up to make Perry “feel more comfortable”

"I would not want to embarrass him here," Rangel said, adding his opinion of Perry: "He’s tall and he’s from Texas."

Mateo, however, was thrilled to see Perry, calling him "the medicine this country needs (right) now."

And Rangel’s old, black, and from Harlem. So what?

“He’s tall and he’s from Texas.”

As opposed to short, fat and from New York.

That’s the best laugh I’ve had (or probably will have) today!

Thanks!

VERY funny — because it’s TRUE!

“I’m not going to fight with you fieldmarshaldj and I hope no one else bothers either. You’ve made your position clear. Please go somewhere where your candidate is being discussed and be supportive of them, instead of tearing down a good conservative GOP candidate on this or other threads.”

I second the motion.

Two things Rangel and fieldmarshaldj have in common:

they inappropriately crash Perry events, and

neither can count (your post lists one thing, not two; and Rangel can’t figure out how many properties he owes taxes on.)

Perry reminds me of the type of guy who would hold a child in front of him to protect himself from assassination.

Still whippin’ that dead horse, Chuck ?

You mean the one about people actually having evidence for their accusations? Yep.

So, a Democrat, who ran for and won office as a Democrat, who helped other Democrats get elected and ran the state campaign for ultraliberal Al Gore and it’s slanderous to suggest while he was a Democrat that he voted Democrat for President ?

I mean there’s denial and there’s world-class denial. What color is the sky in your world, Chuck ?

If Perry supported Reagan in 1984 I’d figure he’d want everybody to know that.

I haven’t heard him address the subject, you?

Who said it was slanderous? I just asked what evidence you had to know who someone voted for in an election. Did he whisper it in your ear one day?

You claim to know Perry voted against Reagan. You seem to make that claim solely because he was a democrat, as if you had never heard of “Reagan Democrats”.

But I thought it was polite to ask you to provide your evidence. You respond by claiming I am in denial, when at this point, all I did was ask you to provide your evidence for your claim. Wouldn’t it be easier to provide your evidence, if you had any at all?

Or do you consider facts a “dead horse” that is of no concern of yours?

Even as Democrat, Perry voted twice for Reagan

Of course, you need to actually believe it. It's not like there are voting records proving it one way or another. Reagan did win Texas quite handily though, so it is clear a lot of Texas Democrats voted for him.

You confuse a Republican President making deals with a Democrat Congress, with a Republican Governor and Legislature. Fail.
Reagan also called the 1986 Amnesty + Enforcement promise a mistake. Rick Gore Supporter Perry sees no difference between Americans and Mexicans.

I don't believe I am confusing anything. From signing the Mulford act as Governor of California in 1967 to his support of the Brady bill in 1991, Reagan had a long history of supporting gun control. He did sign an illegal alien amnesty in 1986. Everybody makes mistakes, but there is nothing conservative about illegal alien amnesties and gun control. My point is that I think the Republican party is more conservative now than it was in 1980. I believe that Perry, Palin (if she runs), Bachmann and Cain are all more conservative than Reagan was and any of them would better protect my 2nd amendment rights. To me, that is a good thing and shows the progress conservatives have made.

I have no gun rights in New York City. I certainly support it, because we’ll need it. But immigration is a more important issue. The political class and plutocrats are literal electing a new people and have been doing so since 1965. They are purposely importing socialists and a new underclass. My children will be a dispised official-discriminated against minority because they are white. That is where we are headed following current laws and kytocratic dicta (Supreme Court rulings).

Fascinating. An aide says he supported Reagan in ‘84 AND ‘80 while a voter alleges that Perry himself admitted to backing Carter again in ‘80.

If he realized Carter needed to go in 1980 that would make his later support of Gore even more retarded.

Without conclusive evidence I have to assume he was for Carter in ‘80. No opinion on ‘84 other than my belief that this would be something that Perry would want to go out of his way to tell people if he indeed supported Reagan.
