Mitt flier: Perry 'wants to kill Social Security' (being distributed in Florida)
Politico ^ | September 10, 2011 | ALEXANDER BURNS

Posted on 09/10/2011 1:47:27 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

The Tampa Tribune posts a flier that the Mitt Romney campaign is distributing in Florida, attacking Rick Perry as "reckless and wrong on social security."

The top of the flier has pictures of a smiling Romney and a surly-looking Perry, and reads: "Two candidates. Only one will protect what's important to you." Continue Reading

"Rick Perry believes social security is a 'failure,'" the flier says, quoting the Texas governor's book. "Rick Perry believes Social Security is unconstitutional ... Rick Perry does not believe Social Security should exist ... How can we trust anyone who wants to kill Social Security?"

Notably not mentioned in the flier: the term "Ponzi scheme," which Perry used to describe Social Security in his book and again in the POLITICO/NBC debate Wednesday. While some Perry critics have fixated on that language, the Romney campaign apparently believes it's not the worst of Perry's problems when it comes to the popular entitlement program.

Except for the photo of Romney, the flier is also almost exactly the kind of attack the Obama campaign could use against Perry in a general election.

Romney is going for the women and black vote in Florida.

But Marco Rubio rose steadily in the polls and buried Crist in the Senate race — using SS as his platform.

The Florida electorate is already aware of this.

With “sweet” talking Marco Rubio campaigning in Florida for nominee Perry, Obama won’t have a chance with this wedge issue.

Mitt’s only chance now is to stop Perry in Florida.

Even the recent straw poll at the Maryland state fair belonged to Gov. Perry.

Mitt is tanking.

One thing I don’t think the Romney folks or Dems are even thinking about is that TODAY’s granny is not your or my granny. She is more independent, she’s likely had a full career, she’s far more educated, she didn’t live thru the Great Depression, she follows politics from her own perspective instead of following gramps. She knows SS has to be fixed. Not fiddled around the edges but FIXED. SS is no longer the 3rd rail of politics.

IF Perry is going to be our nominee, it is better to face this crap now in the primary. It won't make the issue go away, but it could dilute its effectiveness for the general campaign.

Having said that, unless Perry does a better job articulating what he means and how he will fix it, it will bury him.

There is only one demonstrably honest and un-hypocritical man in this race so far, Ron Paul.
And I believe that President Palin will make him either her Sec of State or of the Treasury.
I also worked for Goldwater and Reagan, I really am that old.
Miracles can happen and save and preserve US.
At least until the next election.

Of course, he said those things. And, he is right about them.

Scaring grandma is gutter politics reserved for DUmmy scums, I thought until Romney decided to exploit this tactic for political gain.

Perry should put out his vision and plan to reform (re-structure) Social Security for generations to come. That will be the only right thing to do.

As for Romney’s gutter politics on this issue, shame on him.

Exactly, and it is only getting started. IMO, what Romney is going to do is nothing compared to what BO and company are going to do.

AMEN! I’m a gun toting, rabble rousing, independent, supporter of the Constitution and states’ rights, not your daddy’s Oldsmobile grandma! Romney violated Reagan’s rule...don’t speak ill of another Republican candidate and he is doing to Perry what he did to Palin in the 2008 race....he needs to be slammed dunk....OUT of the so called top tier....he is a pond scum politician....and that is the nicest thing to say about him!

Just what we need - Republicans lying about each other and resorting to dirty campaigning to give Obama fuel for next year.

Romney’s desperate. He’s watching Perry walk away with the nomination and can’t see any path to victory for himself. When Bachmann/Cain drop out the majority of their supporters will find themselves in Perry’s camp - as their second choice sure, but there none the less. All Romney has to look forward to is picking up Huntloser’s 1% constituency. I expect that the nastiness coming out of his campaign will only increase in the months to come.

The difference being, Obama's numbers and street cred are in the gutter and Rick Perry's are climbing. Who will the electorate trust --- the lying sob in the WH or the man from Texas who wants lying sobs like the man in the WH off their backs so they can work?

Nice how (besides Perry’s book Fed Up!”) the “flier” lists “Huffington Post” and “MSNBC Morning Joe” as references for the Mitt Romney flier material.

Ha!

On the money.

While I detest what Romney is doing, as I said above, he is actually doing us a favor. If the American people still aren't ready for a grown up discussion about this, it is better to find out now in the primary.

On the other hand, if they are and they go ahead and nominate Perry in spite of the Elder Scare campaign, it will make it that much tougher for Obambi to pull it off in the general.
