Obama Urges Congress to 'Get on Board' With More Infrastructure Spending
FoxNews ^ | 9/5/11

Posted on 09/05/2011 1:26:16 PM PDT by Jean S

President Obama called for Congress to "get on board" with more infrastructure spending and a new round of middle-class tax cuts Monday, as he delivered a campaign-style speech that served as a warm-up to a vital jobs address later this week.

Interrupted repeatedly by chants of "four more years," the president marked Labor Day in Detroit at a rally with the nation's top labor leaders. He used the address to underscore his alliance with the labor movement -- at a time when cracks are starting to show -- and preview some of the proposals he'll outline during a speech Thursday before a joint session of Congress.

Obama effectively dared Republicans to oppose what he described as the "new way forward" for America. He said the upcoming session would reveal whether there are "straight-shooters" in Congress and whether Republicans will put "country before party."

"Show us what you got," he said, in a message aimed at GOP lawmakers. "No more manufactured crises, no more games."

The president said he didn't want to spill all the details of his upcoming address, but highlighted a few portions. Foremost, the president called for new investment in roads and bridges.

Actually it is Illinois. I see people working on the same roads year after year.. The same roads.

BINGO!!! They have torn up Orland Park for no reason at all. Naperville was a mess for 2 years. The Boreman has been under construction since I've been alive.

Oh and it even gets worse, 75th Street in Naperville will be shredded and probably take years to repave.

Union thugs getting money from us to fix roads that are fine...

Obama Admits At Company That Took Over $5 Million To “Create Or Retain” 3.03 Jobs That Stimulus Projects Weren’t “As Shovel-Ready As We Expected”

$1,500, plus $100 for installation

Obama “Realized Too Late That ‘There’s No Such Thing As Shovel-Ready Projects …’” “[M]r. Obama reflects on his presidency, admitting that he let himself look too much like 'the same old tax-and-spend Democrat,' realized too late that 'there's no such thing as shovel-ready projects’…” (Michael D. Obama Jokes at Jobs Council: ‘Shovel-Ready Was Not as Shovel-Ready as We Expected’

It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for “months to years … and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned … I’m sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act your staff briefed you on many of these challenges.” At this point, Obama smiled and interjected, “Shovel-ready was not as … uh .. shovel-ready as we expected.” The Council, led by GE’s Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter.

If at first outrageous spending doesn’t succeed, try, try, try again.

Yeah, I'm getting really sick of them ripping up roads with nothing wrong with them. They've had LaGrange in Orland screwed up for monthes now and I dread having to drive on it. Southwest Hwy had a bridge that was being rebuilt for like a year (that's finally completed, thank God). Last year they ripped up 95th street for monthes. 159th & dixie hwy was "under construction" for like a year, it's probably STILL being "fixed" as I write this... I don't know because I gave up waiting for it completed and now i just avoid that intersection.

I see a ton of signs all over like post #102

Your taxdollars at work... millions of dollars of "stimulus" money down the drain to repair roads that have nothing wrong with them. I don't think I've ever seen construction crews fix roads that actually NEED repairing in the Chicago area.

Well I guess Obama created lots of "hope and change" for construction workers needing extra bucks.

Last year,a road that I frequently drive was repaved. The company did an excellent job. The old, volcanic cinders were gone

Sounds like a slurry seal. It's a way of prolonging the life of a road surface for a while before it is re-paved. Typically this is done five or ten years after paving, depending on weather and wear.

Doing it to a newly paved road makes no sense and out actually might not adhere very well.

Sounds like stimulus.

The first job might have been non union. So the union comes along and screws it up so a union shop can come along and do it all over again, but crappy, so it has to be redone again in a couple of years.. Tops.

I would also love to figure out how many fed, state and local dollars are spent per mile and per job.

imo, a VERY interesting study would be..."Who is the politician and/or friends that gets the 'rent' money for all of those orange flowers, er, barrels...let us say two bucks a month per barrel as a hypothetical....I would imagine such a figure would be hidden deep in a budget or cost analysis spreadsheet under....safety, or traffic control..somebody is making a ton off of those orange "flowers"...
