Perry Panic Grips Romney Campaign

John Ellis

August 31, 2011

......

Taegan Goddard (who edits the excellent Political Wire website) neatly summarizes the Romney campaign's stop-Perry plan: "1)...Sarah Palin jumps into the race and pulls Tea Party voters away from Perry, 2).... Michigan moves up its primary in the GOP calendar, and 3)....Perry (makes) a mistake in the series of post-Labor Day debates."

Seems a bit thin, as three-pronged strategies go, no?   Let's look at each of the parts:

1) Regarding Sarah Palin, most political observers think that she will not run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination and that she will play a huge role in securing the nomination for Governor Perry by endorsing him in Iowa in late September (or sometime thereafter). A Palin endorsement would accomplish two things: (1) it would effectively end the Bachmann for President campaign in Iowa, and (2) it would make Sarah Palin a major king-maker (if not the major king-maker) in GOP politics.

Whatever else she might be, Sarah Palin is not stupid.  She knows that she cannot win the 2012 general election. Two-thirds of American voters definitely will not vote for her. This fact is determinative.  And it dictates her political strategy.  If she can't win, what can she do that maximizes her leverage? The thing that's sitting there on the table is an endorsement of Rick Perry.  He will be eternally and copiously grateful.....

Also , the amount of state debt has more than doubled since Perry became governor. Perry is another spend and borrow rino like George W. Bush

Another bald-faced (and bold font) lie from Red South - but what else can we expect?

According to USGovernmentSpending.com, state debt in Texas in the year 2000 was $19.2 billion. At the end of 2010, it was $27.3 billion. Even if you don't account for inflation, that is only a 42% increase. If you account for inflation, it is a 16% increase, or 1.6% per year.

He ran against Bill [Elmer Fudd] White...he told Bill White when you let the people of Texas see your tax returns then I’ll debate you. Bill White would never let the people of Texas see his tax returns.

Perhaps, but I think every Freeper here would gladly have taken Bush for the last 3 years rather than Obama.

If Perry just ends up being exactly the same as having Bush back in 2013 I’d have no problem with that instead of Obama.

And if Perry replaces Kennedy with a conservative like Bush replaced O’Connor with one he’ll have done more for conservatism and social issues than any President in history.

One of the first Acts of the new President should be to do what he can executively to shut down the Department of Energy (while the Republican Congress works on eliminating it) and certainly not to appoint anyone to it who can make it appear benign.

"More than 6 in 10 registered voters nationwide say they would definitely not vote for Donald Trump or Sarah Palin for president in 2012..."

Registered voters is a far cry from likely voters, and Palin supporters are extremely likely voters.

It is correct that the loyalty of Palin supporters is as strong as support can possibly get. As I have often pointed out, it is cult-like in it's white hot intensity.

However, in sheer numbers, the Palin supporters only total 10% of Republicans in the latest polls and Republicans only constitute 29% of all voters.

So, what can 2.9% of all voters who are rabidly loyal to Palin accomplish?

Apparently, not even being able to fill enough seats to keep the Sarah Palin movie from crashing and burning in Week 2.

August 1st, 2011 .... Palin's disappointing box office numbers ... The pro-Sarah Palin documentary, "The Undefeated," suffered disappointing box office sales over the weekend, earning just over $5,000. .... The movie, which opened nation-wide July 15, ... rossed $65,132 in its opening weekend in 10 theaters and $24,664 in the second weekend in 14 theaters. It was viewed in four theaters this past weekend and grossed an estimated $5,200.

The rabid Palin supporters will always have an excuse to deny the reality of Sarah Palin's toxic poll numbers.

Apparently, not even being able to fill enough seats to keep the Sarah Palin movie from crashing and burning in Week 2.

Get real.

It was never meant to be a box office anything.

It's Palin bypassing state-controlled media so that their version (where a Tina Fey quote is the same thing as a Sarah Palin quote) is not the only version of her story.

The fact that you think the box office numbers mean anything proves that you don't know your wazoo aperture from a hole in the ground.

PS - The RINO cowboy will be nothing but a distant memory this time next year.

OK I’ve seen some crazy Palin stuff but this takes the cake.

Romney and Perry are running against each other. How can they be working together?

Rove and Perry aren’t on the same team at all. The bad blood goes way back in TX.

How can you put “Gov. Palin and other candidates” in a sentence together? SHE ISN’T A CANDIDATE!

I really do understand where you are going with this. However, I’ve learned not to second guess her. I will say this. I think either scenario is possible, or something we have not even thought about. That’s why she’s so fun to watch.

And the press, regarding her, is even more fun. 8->

Nope, simplistic, binary results usually never apply to the real world.

Palin is very good at building excitement and at articulating views that conservatives agree with and that make liberals start frothing like the rabid dogs that they are. However, she is on shakier ground when it comes to the actual day-to-day of governance; were Palin President, the suits against her would make the suits against her as governor of Alaska pale into insignificance - would she quit in order to spare the federal taxpayer the expense, the way that she resigned as governor?

She is also a good campaigner for others who are running for election; she has the ability - which is relatively rare - to get folks fired up and get them to transfer some of that fire to the candidate for whom she's stumping.

That sort of skill-set makes one a king-maker, not an executive, and since that is Palin's quintessential skill-set, she definitely has greater ability to be a king-maker than to be a successful candidate for President right now.

And before I get flamed by the true believers: I said "right now" and I meant it; as I see her, Palin has the potential to become a great executive, but right now she's still too green - like all fine wines, she just needs some aging (and I don't mean that in the physical sense).

Great plan from the Romney camp... rely on 3 events taking place that the Romney camp has absolutely no control over.

I was thinking the exact same thing. :-)

Good post on Palin’s most important attribute this election cycle, as a campaigner for conservative candidates.

Sarah is supposed to be friends with Perry, right?

If she doesn't enter the race as a Presidential candidate, expect her to accept the VP spot from Perry...
