Perry Panic Grips Romney Campaign

John Ellis

August 31, 2011

......

Taegan Goddard (who edits the excellent Political Wire website) neatly summarizes the Romney campaign's stop-Perry plan: "1)...Sarah Palin jumps into the race and pulls Tea Party voters away from Perry, 2).... Michigan moves up its primary in the GOP calendar, and 3)....Perry (makes) a mistake in the series of post-Labor Day debates."

Seems a bit thin, as three-pronged strategies go, no?   Let's look at each of the parts:

1) Regarding Sarah Palin, most political observers think that she will not run for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination and that she will play a huge role in securing the nomination for Governor Perry by endorsing him in Iowa in late September (or sometime thereafter). A Palin endorsement would accomplish two things: (1) it would effectively end the Bachmann for President campaign in Iowa, and (2) it would make Sarah Palin a major king-maker (if not the major king-maker) in GOP politics.

Whatever else she might be, Sarah Palin is not stupid.  She knows that she cannot win the 2012 general election. Two-thirds of American voters definitely will not vote for her. This fact is determinative.  And it dictates her political strategy.  If she can't win, what can she do that maximizes her leverage? The thing that's sitting there on the table is an endorsement of Rick Perry.  He will be eternally and copiously grateful.....

I doubt it. Perry’s former chief of staff and current communications director is married to Romney’s chief fundraiser in Texas.

That Romney thought he could do Masscare, which then infested the nation with Obamacare, and then thing he could disguise himself as a conservative is par for politicians of late.

Obama has redefined what one might get away with in politics. He’s also set a new low for what a Harvard Law degree represents.

He’ll embolden a new generation of greasy RINOs.

I wish Palin could win. I hope Palin ends up in a cabinet post.

Romney better put a sock in it and focus on job number one: How best to get rid of Obama and put this nation right.

In fact, that’s the best all GOP candidates could do. Stop sniping at each other and develop the message and plan that shows the best voter appeal to dump Obama and his stooges.

Compete on that basis, instead of picking each other apart, and one of you will win. THAT’S THE GOAL.

Palin would be great as head of Dept of Energy.

Maybe romney would like it better if he was groped by perry rather than gripped. Perry looks like he has a pretty good grip.

Me too. It is the most plausible explanation for what Palin is doing that I have seen. And it is classic Palin.

“Palin would be great as head of Dept of Energy.”

Hopefully, she’d be the LAST secretary of that department. She’d oversee shutting it down and then move on to shut down Education, Commerce, Labor, HHS, Agriculture, and then Homeland Security.

They would then make her SecAF, so she could shut down the Air Force and merge it into Naval Space Command, giving any close combat support assets to the Army.

Total savings? Priceless.

I agreed with you until you talked about merging the Air Force and Naval Space Command. Why? There is nothing wrong with a separate Air Force alongside Naval Aviation and other military assets.

Sarah Palin WILL endorse Michele Bachmann eventually.. because they stand for the same things..
Perry talks a good game and is a good number two choice..

Bachmann / Caine is “THE” winning team...
And Hermie Caine is just beginning to realize it..

I think you mean interior. Energy is a bit of a misnomer, they’re in charge of nuclear issues. Interior is in charge of oil and gas.

But why would she even want to be in the cabinet? She’d have to be in DC all the time, and she’d make a tad under 200k a year. She already makes at least 5 times that just from showing up on FOX a few times a month from her home studio for 5-10 min at a clip. That’s not even counting all the other opportunities and the freedom it leaves her with to stay in AK(which she clearly loves and has pretty much lived in her whole life), and with Todd and the kids.

I can see her giving that up for President, that’s a pretty big deal. But to give all that up and take a huge pay cut just to be some run of the mill cabinet secretary in a relatively minor dept? (Can you even remember who W’s Interior Secy was?)

I don’t see it.

Regarding that bogus poll:

More than 6 in 10 registered voters nationwide say they would definitely not vote for Donald Trump or Sarah Palin for president in 2012...

Registered voters is a far cry from likely voters, and Palin supporters are extremely likely voters.

I can’t see her endorsing Bachmann. For one thing she’s said multiple times how important executive experience is and how it’s what she’s looking for and Bachmann has zero.

But moreover, if she endorsed Bachmann she’d basically be ceding her “brand” as the most exciting/popular conservative/GOP woman and passing the torch to Bachmann and admitting she’s supplanted her. I don’t see that happening. Especially since I also think she and her people are still fairly upset that Bachmann even ran in the first place and took up a lot of the space she was planning on having to herself. And don’t forget how Ed Rollins basically slammed her in the press. Palin isn’t only a Republican, she also has a memory like an elephant, and I’m not saying she holds grudges, but she clings to them along with god, guns and religion.

So, I don’t see her endorsing Bachmann. Now, if Bachmann wins a few primaries and emerges as the nominee of course she’ll endorse her, but not beforehand.
