It's a hurricane, not Armageddon. Good grief. A Category 1 storm, you'd think "Irene" was the worst storm America has ever endured.

I’m from St. Louis area originally. Been living near New Orleans for the past 30+ years. I remember one winter it snowed down here. About 1/4” of accumulation. Total devastation. Had to shut down the entire town. All the bridges. Elevated interstate was littered with traffic accidents. Schools closed. Government services shutdown.
What a mess.
The weather channel has been so obviously invested in hyping this storm, they’re running a non-stop graphic which covers about a third of their screen, with what appears to be an entirely artificial loop of speeding clouds and wind-blown trees.
Mind you, it appears it’s entirely fake. It just runs and loops, the apparently fake clouds and the apparently fake trees being blown by the apparently fake wind.
No mayor of NY wants under-preparation and storm devastation on his record. But the City managed over 8” of rain two weeks ago today without any problem. If he weren’t still paying for his indifference during a big snowstorm last December, he might have waited until noon on Saturday to decide whether to unwind their transportation system over the next 8 hours—and at that time it would probably have looked less necessary.
In general, however, I agree. Since the populace is trained to blame the government for being unprepared, I don’t blame the government for sometimes being over-prepared.
Its like a two year old who just dropped their ice cream cone. Its a tragedy and they cry and cry.
While everyone else looks on and smiles at how cute they are.
Its a storm, the wind blows and it rains. If ya live in a flood zone ya shouldn’t be surprised when it floods.
Yep, and take credit for the jobs ‘created’ during the cleanup.

Our local Shoprite supermarket is closed today, having announced on Friday a thousand times on the intercom that they would due to concern for the safety of their patrons - all the while stoking up the shoppers to clear the shelves.
And clear the shelves they did.
My wife and I were dumbfounded when we went to the store Friday to pick up a couple of items. The entire potato isle was empty, as was nearly all of the produce (there were beets left, but that was about it). Whole isles of canned foods were empty, as was the bread isle. We were laughing and shaking our heads. What did people think was going to happen? Hurricanes are pretty fast moving - two day events in most cases. People were stocking for an asteroid strike. Plus, it wasn’t exactly still uncertain about the storm. By that time Friday the eyewall had already collapsed, and the whole thing had begun to weaken.
People are feakin’ sheep. God help us if a true catastrophe ever hits. We’ll be a mass of blubbering idiots.
The big joke here is how much of a bunch of wusses NYC is when they’re not even getting anywhere close to the worst of it. I guess whining is an American tradition though.

We had a snow storm here in Tampa last year. It got down to 27 degrees!!!! BRRRR They almost called out the national guard to save the strawberries.
I can understand how Southern towns wouldn't be prepared for that.

After all is said and done, I plan to write them an email letting them know how blessed they were because Irene was basically nothing once it got past NC and DO NOT think the next one will be the same.
Many of them have never been though a hurricane and I keep hearing them say "they been though bad nor'easters storms before" and just how much worse can it be ? ...
Having lived though Andrew, they have no idea, the object terror and fear sitting in your home not knowing if any minute it will be torn to sheds hearing the walls and roof groaning and vibrating under the strain of being slammed by by the 140 plus MPH winds for hours and hours
In retrospect another Andrew is aimed at my piece of the world....I'm not waiting
