It's a hurricane, not Armageddon. Good grief. A Category 1 storm, you'd think "Irene" was the worst storm America has ever endured.

doooood.....it’s on the NATIONAL news and it is NOT national news. Good grief.
I live in FLA and we deal with stuff like this weekly in the summer. Get over it.
Irene has been overhyped so that Obama can claim credit for saving America from her. The media’s working overtime to contrast his “calm, cool mastery” with Bush’s alleged callous indifference and incompetence. The spin is so obvious it barely needs mentioning.
This is directed at people engaging in the hype:
Did The Prez have a Special Seal made for the occasion?
Well the MSM HAD to build it up so that when things were cleaned up quickly afterwards, they could praise Obama for being so efficient in dealing with it, and contrast that to Geroge W. Bush and Katrina.
South shore is a lot worse, we’ve got winds upwards of 55 mph, pounding rain and 50k in the state are without power and starting after noon it will get progressively worse so it will be heading your way at some point.
I think you’re both right:
Hurricanes are unpredictable and by the time they can be predicted it’s too late to evacuate. But the next time there’s an evacuation order, more people are likely to stay put.
When I saw the news this morning that Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm, I knew all those people would be desolate. I hate to see people unhappy, but they'd be better off if they could find joy in something closer to reality.
Right, now the media types are going to get all snippy because their flights back to their vacation homes are delayed.
ROTFLMAO!!!
"The greatest danger of tropical systems here is not wind, but freshwater flooding."
I've got a foot of water in my back yard. We did get some heavy flooding all throughout the area, but it's actually not as bad as it was three weeks ago when we had two days of heavy rain come through.
It was a big storm, yes. There definitely is some minor damage here and there, but to classify this as a catastrophe as the media is trying to do is ridiculous. I tell you, after this earthquake and last night's storm, we east coasters look like a bunch of sissies.
LOL. That image is seared - seared - into my memory.
We’ve got another huge band of rain coming our way. Here in MA some are under flood watch other areas flood warning. Be safe!
EXACTLY! and then call for higher taxes to clean it all up.
Watching the hysteria on local television here in New England is shameful and embarrassing...we haven't even lost power. Considering that a dog fart usually takes out the power around here; that is saying something.
Up here, we have terrain that turns this kind of rain into serious flooding. Agnes was 'just' a tropical storm.
So stuff your condesention. And once again, try changing the channel.

Are you serious? Is this like the War Between the States all over again? I can promise you that people in fly over country prayed all of you would be spared a major hurricane (you can thank us, God listened.) If you need help I am sure it will be forthcoming from all over the U.S. Anybody legitimately adversely affected has my prayers and sympathy. Otherwise recognize that sometimes the wind blows, sometimes it rains & floods. Stay in until passes, clean it up and move on. That’s what the rest of us do. The world is snickering at the over the top news coverage.
> Westbrook among many on this thread are probably hurricane virgins
Nope.
Hurricanes Carol, Diane, Hazel, Gloria, Bob, are at the top of my memory.
We’ve had many unnamed blizzards, floods, and ice storms where the power was off for weeks. During the 2005 flood here in western NH, many folks in their homes and cars were swept away when a dam burst, never to be seen again, bridges were completely washed out never to be rebuilt again.
Almost every winter we get cut off from civilization for at least a few days at a time when we get a nasty ice storm or snow storm. Our friends in upstate Western New York usually get hammered even worse than we do in the winters, but if you don’t read their papers, you’d never know about it.
We hear a lot about tornadoes, hurricanes, wild fires, and floods in other parts of the country, though. We never minimize or dismiss the awfulness of those things, and we’re always ready to lend a hand in whatever way we can, rather than to poke fun at someone else’s tragedy.
Classic!
