Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Shutting down power in NYC? What-ever for? I can’t imagine anything so stupid! Perhaps they just are hoping for some looting and rioting?
BTW..Obama now at FEMA headquarters...going to make the oceans recede or something....lol.
“Just turned to Fox to hear that NYC was considering shutting down power???”
That’s a big mistake. They did that down here (PR) for Jeannie a few years ago and when they turned the power back on the whole system crashed - for two weeks. They should leave the power on - that’s wht they have fuses and circuit breakers and what not. Plus Bloomie’s little people need to stay tuned as long as possible. Why put them into misery earlier than necessary.
For this same storm we left the power on and in my area power was back after only 4 hours. Most of the island had electricity within 24 hours, and almost a week later, there are only isolated pockets without power.
I was watching CNN (I’ll repent later) and they said the reason ConEd gave was that it’ll reduce the damage from salt water. Most of the power cables are underground. They said that if there is power going through them and the salt water shorts them out, it’s worse than if the cables get soaked with NO power going through them.
I’m not sure if that explanation makes sense, but it’s what they said.
I remember Ernesto. He ruined our camping vacation in northern PA.
I’m some distance NE of your sister. It started out a nice day, humid but clear. Like you said, it changed quickly. Now it is humid, foggy and rainy. From what I’ve read, tomorrow is not going to be a fun day for those of us in CT and MA, beginning in the morning and until about 8 at night.
Tell Cheney I’ll buy his book, just turn off the Halliburton Weather Machine!

And my sister and brother-in-law live on the Severin river up from the Chesapeake Bay. They lost their home with Isabel and re-built. Really depends on what the storm surge is with the tides. So glad they left for higher ground.
You would set the dial to 14.325 MHz and the mode to upper side band (USB). If you cruise around 75 meters (3.900 MHz give or take) lower side band you might find your state emergency net. 75 meters is better for local/regional coverage whereas 20 meters is more long haul.
I don’t get why so many are giving you attitudes this thread.
Thanks much for checking in. Sounds like you are well prepared. Please keep us updated when you can. Take care!
LOL!
Shep just showed a video of trucks lined up for miles to pick up emergency supplies and said that Panetta is calling out 6000 troops to help. I dunno folks...something just doesn’t sound right here. This storm is bad, but hopefully not THAT bad to need 6000 troops called out. Of course..if they cut the power to NY...who knows!

(oh, I forgot to add the “WE’S ALL GONNA DIE!!!!” part from CNN)
The overblown hype continues. Fox saying that hurricane force winds are going to be hitting Long Island at 10pm tonight...
Looking at the Wunderground Map, with LIVE wind speed reporting shows nothing higher than 40-45mph winds at this time.
Winds at Ocean Sands, NC are 26mph...
The amount of rain remains a question still.
Thank you. And I didn’t mean to say firestorms aren’t bad - they are. Luckily neither my brother nor uncle have been affected, being in L.A I guess. Nor my other relatives such as in AZ.
I know, had to hit the mute button when Barry the Magnificent appeared on both TWC and Fox. Love hearing Christie speak.
"Al-Qaida's second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the U.S. believes to be on the verge of defeat, a senior Obama administration official said Saturday. "
Because I’m replying directly to you.
You’re out of line .. and offensive.. and on a
serious thread.

Thanks for that CNN report, that does make sense. That’s why the subway system was shut down, too. They fear future damage from the salt water. I’d better make more coffee just in case Bloomie changes his mind.
I’m guessing no one wants a Katrina/post-Katrina federal situation anymore. Now even the feds have to get involved (which they shouldn’t) because no one wants to be accused of being a Callous Bush.
We used to do fine with our Baltimore Gas & Electric, e.g.; they’d send people all up and down the coast to help. (No more, though - they’re Constellation now so they really aren’t good anymore.) At least in the past, private people used to do things just fine.
