Why the media likely ignores presidential hopeful Ron Paul
Chicago Tribune ^ | 21 aug 2011 | John Kass

Why is the American media so intent on ignoring congressman Ron Paul and his prickly libertarian views?

Paul is running for president in the Republican primaries, and it's plain that the handmaidens of the political establishment — Democrats as well as Republicans — are freezing him out.

He came within a few votes of winning last week's Iowa straw poll, just 152 votes short among almost 17,000 cast.

But rather than shower this intriguing candidate and his views with attention, the news media willfully forgot about him. The question is, why?

Perhaps the answer could be found during the recent Fox News debate in Iowa, in which Paul trashed Republican saber-rattling toward a potentially nuclear Iran.

"They're building up this case like, just like we did in Iraq — build up the war propaganda," Paul said. "It's time we quit this. It's time — it's trillions of dollars we're spending on these wars."

Every time I hear a RP supporter talk, or read anything they write I hear the theme from “The Twilight Zone” in my head.

Ron Paul is far down on my list of presidential candidates. I am not a Libertarian. Now, having said that, I certainly support less spending and smaller government. A lot of candidates sort of talk like that -- but one senses that they don't mean it. Obama, after all, plans to "cut the budget" by investing in everything you can possibly think of.

The candidates who might actually rock the boat and REALLY try to shrink the budget are the candidates that the Establishment want to destroy or ignore. Ron Paul, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann ... possibly Rick Perry. These candidates are each unique, of course, and do not approach government in exactly the same way, but they all seem serious about changing Washington.

The media clearly doesn't want that to happen.

The problem is not what he says. I think if you posted a lot of his views without attribution, folks would view them as positive.

He is ignored because he comes across like a demented uncle who sees winged creatures in his room at night.

Ron Paul is just out of touch with reality. I am surprised that the MSM is not covering him wall to wall, however. After all they could use him to bash Republicans until the end of time!

Because winning straw polls the way this wacked out new-age Lyndon LaRouche does ultimately does not win elections and the press knows it. He has no money and no support from the power brokers who can make it happen.

I listened to a speech by Louis Ferricane (sp?) on the radio a few years ago. He started off making so much sense that I was amazed. As time passed and his speech continued he got nuttier and nuttier, by the end of it he was a raving lunatic talking about the mother ship.

That is pretty much the way I feel after listening to Ron Paul except I don't think he has a mother ship.

When one sees a carcass in the road that neither crow, coyote nor buzzard will eat, it is normal to consider what it wrong with the carcass.

I’ve heard many liberals switching to RP. It’s not much of a philosophical leap. Libertarianism is NOT Conservatism. Not even close. There’s some similar ideas but it’s like a guy mumbling to himself and someone speaking on a hands free phone. Their both talking.. but there’s a big difference about what’s really going on.

"Because nuts perhaps?"

Maybe, but he has a sizable following and came in second in Iowa. He should be covered. The media is shaping the message rather than reporting it. They also call Palin and Bachmann nuts.

You forget Rick Santorum... During the FOX debates, nearly an hour passed before Rick got a question.

Good point. My entire family noticed that.

What irks me about these articles about media coverage of Ron Paul is that so many freepers rush in and say "Well, Ron Paul is like a crazy uncle" or "He hasn't got a chance anyway".

I think such observations totally miss the point.

The media is picking our candidate. They cover who they want to cover. They ignore the people they don't like (and it's not just Ron Paul) and they spin what people say.

Ron Paul is the canary in the coalmine. He may be a crazy guy, but he is also a poster child for how the MSM is controlling the re-election of the Political Establishment so that this country can keep on doing what it's been doing.

Straw pools mean nothing, especially when Paul pays his supporters to show up and vote. (Romney also)

Right, but then why cover Bachmann or the straw poll process at all? The media bias is shaping rather than reporting.

The same reason they’re not covering Rosanne Barr’s presidential campaign?

Media is ignoring RP?

Kind of odd considering the fact that for the past week or more we’ve been getting one story after another about the news media ignoring RP.
