Tropical Storm Irene has developed from Invest 97 in the Western Atlantic Ocean, east of the Leeward Islands.
Buoy Data:
Caribbean Sea
Florida
Be careful what you wish for. This storm could very well become a major hurricane.
Hmm, puts our place near the SC/NC line kinda’ in the crosshairs.
Was planning on going to the beach this weekend for enjoyment - looks like we’ll be doing other stuff instead.
Plenty of time to get the boards waxed and be ready for the first rollers!
Unlike Emily, most of Irene’s track is now going to be over open water. No mountain ranges will break this one up.
Hmmm....Miami and South Beach gone? I would be crushed. (/sarcasm)
Soooooo much easier than clicking through inane ramblings of local weather-readers and Weather Channel Babblers.

“...it seems to be a little strange how much we, on the Texas coast, are hoping for a storm.”
If you get one, hopefully it’ll be a tropical depression-style storm. Lots of rain.
LOL! Glad you are checking in. The Silly Season is in high gear!
It will take at least 18” of rain to bring us out of our drought and getting it all at once would not be good.
I agree. 18 inches would be a mess. 10 inches would be a mess too.
Maybe 3-5 inches would be a good start though.
So there I was...expecting a strong wave south of us then all of a sudden it’s a storm near us to finally a hurricane on top of us.
By 1 - 2 AM I thought it had blown past us with no major issues. We even had electricity at home all through 2:00 AM. And then it really started howling. We didn’t have much data as the radar was down, no cable TV, sporadic internet access, and useless radio jockeys delving into incoming distress calls instead of telling us what’s happening with the system.
By now everybody knows that Irene curved north and cut straight across the island becoming a cat 1 on top of us.
By dawn it was semi-safe to go out so I got my car from the garage and checked on all relatives and the office.
We have power and internet at the office! A real achievement considering life in the tropics.
No major damage to report down here. Hope you guys in the mainland fair well.
Cheers,
cll
We have a true kakistocracy here in the Keys at the city county and state level. Even our State Attorney will have to be screwed into the ground for burial.
kakistocracy - Definition: Government by the worst persons; a form of government in which the worst persons are in power.Government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.
Etymology: 1829, "government by the worst element of a society," coined on analogy of aristocracy from Gk. kakistos "worst," superl. of kakos "bad" (which is perhaps related to the general IE word for "defecate") + -kratia "rule of," from kratos "strength, power, rule" (see -cracy)
I don't even watch the Flintstones least I hear the name Wilma LOL
.
That’s all very good news. Glad you all fared so well.
Thank you for checking in and providing a local report! Very relieved to know you, your family and your property are safe and sound. Pretty amazing that the NHC Advisory told of 800,000 without power on the island. Don’t see that very often. Great to have you back!
Glad to hear everyone is A-OK ((((Hugs))))
11AM update--Irene expected to be a major hurricane while passing east of the Florida peninsula. Keys and FL Gulf coast up through Tampa Bay are outside of the Cone of Death!
That is indeed now the forecast. The NHC expects Irene to be a Cat 3 storm over the central Bahamas. Their current track goes just east of Andros Island on Thursday morning.
Discussion advisory suggests that the current track is somewhat west of the model consensus -- the Canadian Model could be a good one to watch, then, as it is the only one now west of the 'Official' track this morning... so the east coast of Florida isn't out of the woods yet. Floyd, anyone?
Said the Cat3 will skim up the coast and go for Charleston.
I, for one, am not giddy with joy....what if it skims and turns....and we're dealing with an unexpected Cat3?
And I wouldn't wish a hurricane on SC either.
