PERRY: WHY I SUPPORTED AL GORE...

In an interview with an Iowa radio station on Monday, the Republican presidential contender explained his role as the Gore campaign’s Texas chairman by saying that “this was Al Gore before he invented the Internet and got to be Mr. Global Warming.”

But in fact, global warming was already a significant theme for Gore in 1987 and 1988 — long before his activism led to several books, a Nobel Prize and a part in an Academy Award-winning film. It was also well before the right gave him the "Mr. Ozone" nickname and talk radio heaped endless mockery on the future vice president.

Well alrighty then.

This isn’t a joke is it?
Satire maybe?

If true, Perry is toast when this gets around.

“Algore was a fairly conventional southern Democrat once upon a time, fairly conservative. He was against abortion, for instance.”

Yea, that was how I remember him too, back then. But, apparently, he started slipping into liberal-land, even back then. I agree with others, Perry does have some explaining to do here...being that he chaired Gore’s 1988 Texas campaign.

Hey Politico,

Give the man a break. Those of us who actually know about the internet and “global warming”...now “climate change”...had accurately tagged Gore as a fat idiot long ago. (After all, he was a senator.)

As for Perry, one cannot expect poorly educated government-critters to be up on things at that early stage - since the “scientists” perping this lie had not yet been exposed as math hacks.

As for you MSM clowns, the general public knows you for the scientific cretins that you’ve always been. You are the fools...as was, as is now, and as always will be.

Shove it up your smelly Obamas.

Yep. Al Gore was conservative until he had to change his politics to run with the then seen Conservative “The era of big government is ober” Bill Clinton. Also a so called conservative Democrat. Ole Bill never did push any State gun control on Arkansas but boy oh boy he played the politics of the left and become the most anti-2nd amendment President EVER. You guys are too young or just forget how politics really really sucks.

I actually liked SENATOR Gore. He was fairly conservative on a lot of issues, most notably free trade and right to life.

He and Tipper were the poster children for censorship with that PMRC crap.

Out of curiosity I looked up some profiles in this thread and surprise...Most in favor of Palin. Even though her position on Global warming or ‘climate change” is shall we say....more “nuanced” then perry’s. This is actually an issue he beats all the candidates on.

Gore was a typical Liberal Democrat who took the standard position on the Left’s cherished policies. But the guy that Bush beat is an entirely different person. The guy cracked up after that election grew a beard, got fat, and started his crusade to be the darling of moveon soon after. Before that he was considered rather dull and uninteresting.

either way sorry to disappoint...Perry is solid on this issue.

Am I the only voter who is sick to death of being asked to vote for people who supported stuff before they didn’t?

Look, my views have solidified somewhat since 1988, so I’m not completely unsympathetic to this in theory, but JHC, I never in my life was stupid enough to vote for a Democrat.

What this guy is telling me, is that at 18 years of age when I first registered to vote in 1969, I was smarter than he was 19 years later. And that’s with all the Leftist propaganda the MSM was floating during the Vietnam war. And the mental political acuity of an 18 year old in 1969, is not what I would generally compare to that of a state campaign chairman.

Who did he vote for in 1976, 1980 and 1984, if he was
Gore’s Texas Campaign Chairman in 1988? It certainly wasn’t Reagan or the home team was it.

POS...

This guy is a slimeball.

“I used to think that Gore was a fairly moderate/conservative Democrat. From the south and all, at least he talked a decent game. I totally agree that Gore transformed into this caricature over the last 10 years or so... As for Perry, dunno still, I am skeptical, but still evaluating.”

Actually, my problem with Perry supporting Gore back then was not really Gore, but rather how any conservative could campaign for ANYONE from the Democratic Party to be president after the Democrats nearly impeached Reagan over Iran-Contra (starting in late 1986). You’d think Perry would have figured out, really quickly, just who the Democrats were, and ran for the hills (like Phil Gramm did 5 years earlier and Reagan years before that). Instead, he tried to make one of them (albeit still pretty much moderate) the next president.

But this article make me wonder just how moderate Gore even was back then...

Out of curiosity, for those of you upset by this, if you were a Democrat in 1988, who would you have supported for President?

Here are your choices:

Michael Dukais

Gary Hart

Joe Biden

Jesse Jackson

Dick Gephart

Paul Simon

Al Gore

I think it was from one of the Coulter books where she documented all of the connections between Hammer setting up Al Sr. in business before ushering him into politics. He was apparently a big financier of Al Jr. up until his death in the 90’s sometime - who knows Armand Hammer probably left him some fat money in a will as well.

Oh crap. I had NO IDEA he did this. And what a lame excuse he made. I was so excited about his candidacy, but now it appears that he’s just another flip-flopping sorry excuse of a man.
