Obama: Creating jobs must be Washingtons top priority
By: MJ Lee August 6, 2011 06:57 AM EDT
Marking the end of a tumultuous week for Washington and Wall Street, President Barack Obama used his weekly address to urge Congress to focus all of its attention on job creation as soon as it reconvenes in September.
In remarks recorded before the U.S. government saw its credit rating lowered for the first time, Obama called the deficit-reduction agreement Congress passed this week an important step for the countrys long-term economic outlook.
But in the short term, our urgent mission has to be getting this economy growing faster and creating jobs, he said. Thats whats on peoples minds; thats what matters to families in this country.
The Labor Department announced Friday morning that 117,000 jobs were added to the economy in July and that the unemployment rate had slipped to 9.1 percent. Later in the day, speaking at a jobs for veterans event, Obama said his singular focus is the economic well-being of the American people.
We are going to get through this, he said. Things will get better. And were going to get there together.
Obama echoed this message in Saturdays address, saying that the top priority for Washington must be helping Americans find jobs and building a sense of economic security for middle class families.
Just as Democrats and Republicans finally came together to resolve the debt ceiling impasse, the president said the two parties must come together once more to tackle unemployment.

He’ll create jobs just as soon as he finishes lowering the sea levels. Might have to pull the styrofoam Greek Columns out of storage though.
That makes sense. But, they still have to find a viable black minority challenger. I don’t think Sharpton, Conyers or Rangle would stand for any choice but black and there are no liberal blacks of any prominence, it seems.
Blah, blah, blah.
Ol’ Bammys lips,
They be a flappin.
I know some noise
Must be coming out.
But who would know?
No one be a listenin.
Obama’s blabber-jabber is like firemen predicating action after the fire has burned the house down. The man? is full of hot smoke. So far only Palin and Bachmann appear willing to address Obama’s personal ideollogy. It was good to hear Trump coming out again; I move him back up a notch or two as presidetial material.
The two are not mutually exclusive.
He could be evil and not know a thing about economics.
