GOP leaders say the nation can't afford to default

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hope dimming for a broad debt-limit deal, Congress and the White House scrambled Wednesday to salvage deficit-reduction talks while top congressional Republicans said the nation cannot afford to default on its obligations — for economic reasons and their party's own good.

Ahead of a fourth negotiating session at the White House in as many days, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell defended his proposal to give President Barack Obama new powers to increase the nation's borrowing limit without GOP support.

"I refuse to help Barack Obama get re-elected by marching Republicans into a position where we have co-ownership of a bad economy," McConnell said on a radio talk show, contending that letting the nation go into financial default would give Obama reason to blame Republicans for the negative fallout.

House Speaker John Boehner added his own warning against default, even as he expressed frustration with the White House over its role in negotiations to trim long-term federal deficits.

These federal agencies are draining hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars away from us and directly serving Obama and we can’t afford to let it continue.

The same people that got us into this mess are now saying they will get us out of this mess. If you believe that you (we) are dumber than the politicians that created the mess.

Not raising the debt ceiling (to new stratospheric highs) will not cause a default!

They used to hang people for stealing a mans horse.

It’s time to return to basics.

My congressmen went for a $50 million cut in funding to the arts and got a $20 million cut.

Personally, I think they need to be eliminated altogether. Good art will sell on the open market.

True.

Like raising your credit limit on your credit cards wont cause you to default - being unable to pay back though is a different story.

But the nation is on the verge of default already - with regards to default, it is better that we choose to default on our own.

Why can’t this go month to month? Vote EVERY month on the amount of spending. They won’t do that because that is no fun.

What would dear reader do with unlimited debt authorization from Congress? Let’s see...an election is coming up for a Chicago community organizer and a lot of walkin’ around money is needed.

Exactly. Means we shouldn’t raise the debt ceiling.

They just can’t come to terms with cutting spending....and, those are the good guys. The bad guys want us to go broke.

Either way, how can raising the debt ceiling be a good thing for anybody but career pols?

The problem with the GOP is its "leadership" makes the guy in the box at the wake look like a pole vaulter.

Obviously no matter what happens in an election, like the Republican takeover of the House in 2010, the Washingtonians will not give up power voluntarily.

Therefore, the next time the GOP gains the WH, the first order of business will be the purge of the leadership in the House and Senate,by any means short of murder necessary, and all bets are off.

GOP leadership will be comprised of people who are new to DC, and are street fighters who will be short, nasty, and brutish with the DC mafia.

Why do all these politicians keep lying to us? Not raising the debt ceiling does not mean default. There is plenty of money to service the debt, veterans, social security, etc. The problem is that what is left would have to be prioritized and some of their precious programs would have to go by the wayside.
I am just sick to death of the scare tactics and lies from both sides.

GOP leaders say the nation can't afford to default,

The GOP should have stuck to that every year since 1994.
But the GOP clutched defeat from the jaws of victory and left the Democrats take over.

He does not get it. He is just as guilty even if he plays this scheme. It is no different than if they voted straight up for the increase.

The biggest problem the republicans have is that they are not taking an aggressive stand to educate the American people to the democrat propaganda and their insane policies.

For instance- Social security will only not be paid if the democrats and treasury make a direct decision not to pay it. If the debt ceiling is not raised then government income does not drop to zero. And since SS is also funded by current payroll tax then it is easy to fund at this point.

The government would have to take all that money and choose to spend it on some thing else. And the republicans should be ready to scream bloody murder if the democrats try that. It will be the fault of this administration and its political party. As it is, this point should already be being made to the public.

Be honest, if we do what you say the rest of the Federal Government will have to be cut by 90%.

"GOP leaders say the nation can't afford to default"

"Yes, we can!" And we will, too, eventually. Things will only need to get a little rougher first.

Well if none of them want that then they should just abolish the ceiling period. They all want to raise it anyway. It is raised every time we hit it so if a rule is NOT a rule then get rid of it. The House is in control of the purse, let em fight it out there, send it to the Senate, and then the Prez just like everything else.
This dance between who wants to spend less but raise it anyway is ridiculous.
