President Obama on Tuesday said he cannot guarantee that retirees will receive their Social Security checks August 3 if Democrats and Republicans in Washington do not reach an agreement on reducing the deficit in the coming weeks.
"I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on August 3rd if we haven't resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it," Mr. Obama said in an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, according to excerpts released by CBS News.

Tiger is friends with that nasty sleazbag from Jakarta?
How much do the welfare parasites cost vs the SSI payments? I believe SSI should only go to the truly disabled, not just some magic age limit.
AFAIK the budget for SSI/medicare dwarfs everything else in the US.
“My old age money is mine”
INCORRECT:
Everything you paid in was used by OTHER PEOPLE, as fast as it came in. Now, you are depending on other people to pay yours, and there are no longer enough of them to cover everyone who is old.
It sucks that the Democrats convinced you that you didn’t have to save for retirement on your own, but there it is.
it was a Democrat vote-buying Ponzi scheme, the butcher’s bill is now due, and you aren’t the only one who fell for it.
My hope is if we get a "Tea Party" type candidate, they will run on the Republican ticket. I don't think another "Tea Party" person would throw themselves in the ring as a third party. Maybe I am giving too much credit to common sense. But, that is just my humble opinion.
Sad but true.
In my case, it’s over $400,000 (not including interest) for my wife and I.
Pocket money for Washington pols, but not trivial for me.
I know. :-(
Thanks, but as I said, it belongs to another poster and I failed to keep the name.
And this bears repeating as much as possible.
Here is the breaking Republican "response:" McConnell: Give Obama new powers on debt limit
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., offered a new plan to allow the president to demand up to $2.4 trillion in new borrowing authority by the summer of next year in three separate submissions. Those increases in the so-called debt limit would automatically take effect unless both the Republican House and the Democratic Senate enact legislation specifically disapproving it. Obama would be able to veto such legislation. The GOP plan would require that Obama submit spending cuts along with his borrowing requests. But unlike the increase in the debt limit, they wouldn't automatically take effect.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I have a relative who is collecting SSI, and is not disabled , but lazy.
SSI needs to be reformed, and every single person on it needs to have their case reevaluated.
I predict, if SS is eliminated, you will have a lot of retired people moving out of the country to countries with a cheaper cost of living. They will not pay taxes to the US. I will be one of them.
When the government reneges on a promise, then the trust and feeling of patriotism to the country will die.
For those taht missed this... a good post...repeat often...

LOVE this!!! The person who wrote this is a college student. Perhaps there is hope for us after all. DIVORCE AGREEMENT
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY WELL PUT AND I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE IT’S BY A YOUNG PERSON, A STUDENT!!! WHATEVER HE RUNS FOR, I’LL VOTE FOR HIM.
Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:
We have stuck together since the late 1950’s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.
Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let’s just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.
Here is a model separation agreement: —Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.
—We don’t like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. —You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. —Since you hate guns and war, we’ll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. —We’ll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar and bio diesel. —You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O’Donnell. You are, however, responsible for finding a bio diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them.
—We’ll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. —You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless, home boys, hippies, druggies and illegal aliens. —We’ll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO’s and rednecks. —We’ll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .
—You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we’ll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. —You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we’ll help provide them security.
—We’ll keep our Judeo-Christian values. —You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness and Shirley McLane. You can also have the U.N. but we will no longer be paying the bill.
—We’ll keep the SUV’s, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Volt and Leaf you can find. —You can give everyone health care if you can find any practicing doctors. —We’ll continue to believe health care is a luxury and not a right. —We’ll keep “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “The National Anthem.” —I’m sure you’ll be happy to substitute “Imagine”, “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”, “Kum Ba Ya” or “We Are the World”.
—We’ll practice trickle down economics and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot.
—Since it often so offends you, we’ll keep our history, our name and our flag.
Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I’ll bet you answer which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.
Sincerely, John J. Wall Law Student and an American
P.S. Also, please take Ted Turner, Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Barbara Streisand, & Jane Fonda with you.
P.S.S. And you won’t have to press 1 for English when you call our country.
John Boehner ought to hold a press conference today and declare, "I CAN guarantee the military WILL get paid; the seniors and disabled WILL get their checks; and we will NOT default on our obligations. On the other hand, I CANNOT guarantee that NPR will get their fat check; I CANNOT guarantee that the pork project by Senator Chuck Schumer will get their check; Or the one by Charlie Rangel; Or the one by Barney Frank."
And on and on.
If the president is not going to make the tough decisions, we should be ready to make them, and to make sure the American people know who is making the decisions.
Mt fear is that with the GOP's phobia of the press, they will cave, and still get blamed.
Simply flip this — there won’t be the money to pay those 170+ WH employees earning $100,000 or more, because those salaries / that $37 million a year will be first to go to pay Social Security.
Hold up SS payments as a first step?? Use seniors as pawns in a political fight?? The O’boy stepped in it big time
!!. This can be used by the Republicans for years. If they have the balls.
By having SS retirees, and disabled veterans, as the top two in his cross hairs to take down first, speaks volumes about what he thinks of them, and where his priorities lie.
He has just guarenteed an increase in the debt ceiling. He has managed to scare the seniors half to death. Can’t see the wimpy GOP standing in the way. How sad for our Republic.
This should really pizz off his people.
Thank for the ping. I am skeptical that McConnell can do this without the House passing a bill to the Senate or vice versus in the nornal process, if that is really what it is saying. The link article doesnt explain it.
In an ideal world the money never would have been legislated at all and the cuts would be made during a budget deal, but the irony is that : shutting down the government, cutting programs, increasing national debt and increasing the debt limit are ALL unpopular. I can explain it, but it involves a clueless public.
