(Reuters) - U.S. state and local governments cut thousands of jobs in June, pushing their payrolls down to the lowest in five years, according to Labor Department data released on Friday, and analysts do not expect the losses to end any time soon.
Local governments shed 18,000 jobs and state governments cut 7,000 in June. The level of local government employment -- 14.143 million employees -- is the lowest since June 2006. State government employment is the lowest since August 2006.
"Today's employment report reflects continued belt-tightening at the state and local level and the trend we have previously noted, a trickle-down in budget cuts from the state to the local level," wrote Natalie Cohen, senior analyst at Wells Fargo Securities, in a research note.

I work for local government, and hardly consider myself a parasite - though I know of a few departments that the county can do without, or least cut down on. Our office will be losing one next month - to retirement. I’m not aware that her position will be filled any time soon. The front office staff will have to just step it up. We all know we’re lucky to have a job in this economy.
The only reason we didn't see under Clinton was the economy was growing and the various recipients were able to raise new taxes to cover Clinton's “100,000 new policemen”.
But the Democrats like to pad the govt payrolls as high as possible....helps with their vote total.
That’s because we’ve let them screw us over.
As it relates to Federal jobs directly, that “bleeding” must be a trickle: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/256225/census-and-growth-federal-government-employment-veronique-de-rugy
It’s a start, but more permanent layoffs of the bureaucratic class is needed.
OMG.....what are we to do without the hoards of local and state government bureaucratic nanny overlords running our lives...
I would venture to say "nobody" that matters would notice...like taxpayers
Incrementally works...Boil the frog ever so slowly....He'll enjoy the warming water.
Slowly grow government...A step at a time, government becomes more controlling, slowly becomes larger...All encompassing, incrementally spend more and more...calls for more taxes...Slowly incrementally taking all control of money, banks, industry...your health....
Regulate, tax, control...All while flood the country with those that can't tell the difference between and an oligarchy, a dictatorship, or a Republic...Or don't even care...
Honest question....If you were "CEO" of your local government and responsible to the taxpayer to run the most efficient and productive government services.....
How many jobs could you cut in percentages ? 10 %, 20 % 30% or more?
My guess would be around 25% to 40 % but that's a WAG based on no knowledge at all
Our County used to employ around 700 employees. In the past 4 years, we have layed off 30% of our General Fund employees (Sheriff, DA, jail, probation, PD, Assessor, Treasurer, Auditor, Planning, Building, Clerk, Recorder, Treasurer. We have closed the library and re-converted the County share of services to only a computer and warehouse backbone function, (local communitees must provide volunteer staffing.) Our museum is entirely operated by volunteers.
We layed off or eliminated 30 some positions from mental health services in June.
Laying off teachers, keeping admin. Laying off police, keeping community outreach and PR. Laying off fire fighters, keeping permit issuance and school educators.
How much of government can be considered to be a jobs program for people who would otherwise be on welfare? I think a decent percentage.
The Feds are immune, they get our money through withholding and are a 20-40% partner in every business in the country, without having to do a thing for it.
The wealthiest counties in the country continue to be those around DC, where there is never a recession.
This economy will bounce back when the red sons of bitches who took over in 2006 and still control the White House and senate are kicked down the road in 2012.
Well then, lets hope government grows even more, hire millions more bureaucrats and eventually, our economy and unemployment won't be a problem!
Problem solved!
So, have your taxes been dramatically reduced?
“Wake me when they get to 1970 levels.”
Better yet, wake me when we get to 1790 levels.
Don’t know how many we had in Ike’s time, but we
have a population of 300 million and 22.5 million
govt. employees. Can someone tell me why we need
1 govt. employee for ever 14 people in the country

Our commissioners asked all departments to cut 5%. We’re a small county with a lot of retirements this past year and a few more coming up. If I absolutely had to, I’d cut another 10%. They have done no hiring since the beginning of the year except when necessary. They post jobs and try to hire internally. In my department, it’s me (full time - supervisor) and one part-timer who’s 77 yrs old. I could use somebody fulltime who is stronger, but I do double and triple duty if I have to. No complaints, I’m glad to be working, and my co-worker works hard within her ability. :-)
I am often offered a ‘tip’ for my services. I tell them, “No, you are already paying me through your taxes - don’t give government ANY MORE than you have to.”
