Navy to Cut Jobs Amid Recession-Driven Sailor Surplus
Fox News ^ | July 08, 2011 | Justin Fishel

With more sailors staying in the military amid a slumping economic recovery, the U.S. Navy is taking the unprecedented step of firing low-ranking petty officers to help rein in spending. The Navy plans to let go of 3,000 young sailors after economic uncertainty put the service in the unusual position of having a manpower surplus. The move comes as a new government report shows that the unemployment rate ticked up to 9.2 percent -- marking 29 straight months that number has been over 8 percent and a record streak since the Great Depression.

It always seems they’re getting rid of extra seamen when a Democrat is in office.

If I was one of these 3000, I’d start screaming that they threw me out because I was “gay” and then sue the bastards.

Deja vu Jimmy Carter all over again. 1978-1980 the Navy was almost paralyzed due to the severe lack of middle grade NCO’s.

I left the army in the 1973/1974 recession.

At the time my army buddies and leadership thought it was insane, but it worked out.

Good point.

Let’s destroy the future leadership, the very ones who are responsible for multi-million dollar weapons systems. We’ll recoup the money when they don’t have the proper people operating and maintaining those systems.

Or just maybe we could cut the programs the current administration started that worsened the current mess, the very ones that he wants to pour more money into. All while firing a few junior enlisted Sailors who make maybe 35K a year.

3000 sailors is not going to produce any relevant savings. Let a large carrier sit one of two days in port and the savings would be the same.

Because of the poor economy none of the branches of service have had any trouble filling their recruitment quotas for the past few years.

For those of you were in the service long ago, the pay has increased dramatically. In the Navy, there is little danger if you are not a pilot, SEAL or corpsman (corpse man to Obama), there isn't much danger. The Navy fought its last major sea battle in 1945.

Precisely. Dispose of the enlisted, and keep the officers no matter how worthless some of them are. Some things never change.

Thank you for your service to our country. Now, get out.

Retired from the Navy nearly 10 years ago.

What I find sad is that they're going to kick guys out who more than likely would stay in, who will be left high and dry with little or no job prospects in this lousy economy.

Back after the VN war, officers were dumped by the boat load (no pun intended), especially pilots and RIO’s if memory serves me right.

Those 3,000 laid off will have high priority in the new Internal Revenue employees in a few years (30-40,000).
Their job will be to make sure you buy health care insurance. Yep, the brown shirts are coming.

Don't believe me? Check out how Pelosi said today she is going to guarantee 400,000 new jobs. Damn scary.
