There is nothing the state of North Carolina can do, Elaine Riddick says, to make up for forcing her to be sterilized when she was 14 years old.
"They cut me open like I was a hog," the woman who now lives in Atlanta said at a Wednesday hearing in Raleigh held by a panel working to determine compensation for thousands of victims of the state's defunct eugenics program. "My heart bleeds every single day. I'm crushed. What can they do for me?"
Riddick, 57, was one of 13 people who spoke at the meeting, and one of nearly 3,000 living victims of the program, which was shuttered in 1977, three years after the last sterilization was performed. The public hearing is part of a process unprecedented not just in North Carolina, but nationally. About a half dozen other states have joined North Carolina in apologizing for past eugenics programs, but none of the others have put together a plan to compensate victims of involuntary sterilization.
"It's hard for me to accept or understand or even try to figure out why these kinds of atrocious acts could be carried out in this country," said Gov. Beverly Perdue, who appointed the Eugenics Task Force that convened Wednesday's hearing.
Any plan that involves financial compensation will be a hard sell, though, in a year when the state budget includes deep cuts to numerous programs. The General Assembly passed the $19.7 billion spending plan over Perdue's veto. Bills in the legislature aimed at providing specific financial and medical compensation for victims have stalled.
"We've made some baby steps, but as we get closer to the big one, there's some pushback," said state Rep. Larry Womble, D-Forsyth, the lawmaker who's been most active on the issue.

FR is a pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-liberty site. We do not support government forcing anything on anyone, much less forced sterilization. You can either keep this NAZI-like crap to yourself or get the hell off of FR! Choice is yours.
It has been widely accepted that putting retarded kids into regular clases destroys the learning opportunities of the regular children and does nothing to improve the education of the retarded children. It is nothing more than PC and social engineering, and it is an utter failure. It has been proven that retarded children learn more when put into classes specifically tailored to their needs.
My children are not an experiment, and I resent them losing their educational opportunities and being used as a tool to make people feel better about themselves (in this case it's the parents of retarded children, and liberal). Retarded children have no business in classrooms with normal children. It is a lose-lose scenario. I actually worked in these types of classrooms for a few years before I got a real job, and witnessed this lunacy firthand.
So yeah, when I say I do not want retarded children drooling over and spreading their feces and disease to regular children, that was merely a short synopsis of the above.
I refuse to come to conclusions using my emotions. I try to rely on my intellect solely.

These are not rhetorical questions. I'd like an honest answer, if you're capable of such.
Let's go whole hog: in addition to getting the government out of the Caring For The Poor business, we should get the government out of the Teaching The Children business.
Government does an astonishingly bad job of both those activities.

Few will argue that we do not have enough stupid people in America today. I say we have plenty, and it is an affront to me that they are considered my equal under the law and our moral code.

In his world, who would get to decide where the “Stupid enough to be sterilized” line is? And then of course there are many other “undesirables” besides mere lack of intellect...
Which begs the question “Why just sterilize them? They’re still they’re messing up my planet”.

The irony is that they fall below their own artificial threshold for human rights. If their policies are ever enacted and followed according to their specifications, they’ll be among the first to be sterilized, euthanized and harvested.
You do realize that some military get paid so little that their families get public assistance, right? Or are you one of the stupid people that you're complaining about?
