N.C. Forced Sterilization Victims Voice Grief, Pain
FoxNews.com ^ | 6/23/2011

There is nothing the state of North Carolina can do, Elaine Riddick says, to make up for forcing her to be sterilized when she was 14 years old.

"They cut me open like I was a hog," the woman who now lives in Atlanta said at a Wednesday hearing in Raleigh held by a panel working to determine compensation for thousands of victims of the state's defunct eugenics program. "My heart bleeds every single day. I'm crushed. What can they do for me?"

Riddick, 57, was one of 13 people who spoke at the meeting, and one of nearly 3,000 living victims of the program, which was shuttered in 1977, three years after the last sterilization was performed. The public hearing is part of a process unprecedented not just in North Carolina, but nationally. About a half dozen other states have joined North Carolina in apologizing for past eugenics programs, but none of the others have put together a plan to compensate victims of involuntary sterilization.

"It's hard for me to accept or understand or even try to figure out why these kinds of atrocious acts could be carried out in this country," said Gov. Beverly Perdue, who appointed the Eugenics Task Force that convened Wednesday's hearing.

Any plan that involves financial compensation will be a hard sell, though, in a year when the state budget includes deep cuts to numerous programs. The General Assembly passed the $19.7 billion spending plan over Perdue's veto. Bills in the legislature aimed at providing specific financial and medical compensation for victims have stalled.

"We've made some baby steps, but as we get closer to the big one, there's some pushback," said state Rep. Larry Womble, D-Forsyth, the lawmaker who's been most active on the issue.

The difference between eugenics and abortion can be reduced to whether or not the act is voluntary or coerced. In truth, the society that selects its future citizens will soon enough be selecting out the likes of me and thee.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Agreed. And while abortion is voluntary and not forced, I would argue that is is coerced.
We live in a culture where our government devalues life so much so that it encourages and promotes an unhealthy lifestyle that includes abortion.
Why else would they take my tax dollars to perform them? I guess it’s for the same reason they take my tax dollars to promote and perpetuate welfare.
Welfare and abortions are truly evil symptoms of a sick and decaying society.
Bingo!
Abortuaries are specifically located in order to insure that certain people are more likely to abort than others.
Blacks make up 10 to 12 percent of the population, but have more than a third of abortions. This happens year after year and has been going on for decades, it is impossible to dismiss this as coincidence.
It could be a lot of things, but it's not a rewriting of history. What the goal of focusing on it is at the moment is another matter.
My wife is Cherokee and her family would talk about things like this happening to people they knew in NC and OK, yet I had never heard of anything like this until I got to know her and her family.
The better solution is to quit paying women to have babies on welfare.
And then cut, hack, and slash the welfare program to nothing.
There shouldn’t even be welfare by the state, much less forced sterilizations for those on it.
I would submit it is a visibility issue. The well to do have hidden areas or just do not want to be seen going into such a place to deal with a “mistake”.
The other areas just use it as a form of birth control.
Agreed. The problem is the recipients of these programs are a large voting bloc. Even minor cutbacks are difficult.
There are many ways to stop people from breeding for welfare money.
Yeah ... like ... maybe ... don't give them money for breeding?
Seriously ... Assuming that we're going to have welfare (I don't think we should), the policy should be simple: you go on welfare, you get support for your current kids. You have more if you want, but your benefits don't increase because of them. Working folks don't get a payraise for having kids (at least, I never did and I don't know anybody else who did). Why should welfare recipients get a "benefits raise"?
"...Are you aware that very few of the victims of the eugenics programs ever had children? Or, do you think it was probably better that way? ..."
If the folks sterilized were found to be functionally retarded then I approve of their sterilization. 3 generations of retards is more than enough. Stupid people beget stupid children.
Few will argue that we do not have enough stupid people in America today. I say we have plenty, and it is an affront to me that they are considered my equal under the law and our moral code. They are not my or your equal if they cannot take care of themselves. Collecting welfare is de facto evidence that they are not capable of taking care of themselves. They are a drain on all of us "producers" and they are arrogant to boot in their entitlement mentality and handicapped placard fraud.
I also do not want their cretin children drooling on my kids at school; they should be sequestered away in separate classes. Putting them into regular classrooms only ruins it for the regular kids.
"...As someone who pays over half of his income in federal, state and local taxes, I am sick of being expected to cover the costs of children that I did not have the fun of making myself, which requires me to put feeding my own family DEAD LAST in my list of priorities. ..."
dude, you are spot on. I agree 100% and when you break it down like this it is hard to form a valid opposing argument.
So, I guess you are a big fan of Buck v. Bell. What about Roe v. Wade, do you like it too?
Few will argue that we do not have enough stupid people in America today. I say we have plenty, and it is an affront to me that they are considered my equal under the law and our moral code.
What name do you post under at Stormfront?
They are not my or your equal if they cannot take care of themselves.
Their equality comes from their God-given right to life, not intelligence.
I also do not want their cretin children drooling on my kids at school; they should be sequestered away in separate classes.
It looks like you're also a big fan of Plessy v. Ferguson.
You are a TROLL!
There but for the grace of God go I.....
I am no fan of welfare by any means. I HATE it with a passion. It begets entitlement mentality and creates the very problem it was claimed to destroy.
But how dare you......
There is hardly a one of us who couldn't have ended up in that situation and ended up the same if we were born into it.
Do you honestly think I give a damn what you think after you wrote this:
Or this:
I also do not want their cretin children drooling on my kids at school; they should be sequestered away in separate classes.
Your rhetoric is identical to that of the scum on neo-Nazi hate sites.
Sadly, I think there are people on FR who would advocate this kind of thing...
Read the article, which was somewhat vague about the reasons for the program.
Short knowing the reasons, I can't say I'm critical of it.
Maybe you can explain what happened and why? You might get more support from that than empty moralizing.
FR is a pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-liberty site. We do not support government forcing anything on anyone, much less forced sterilization. You can either keep this NAZI-like crap to yourself or get the hell off of FR! Choice is yours.
