Where have all the snow globes gone?(How the govt is making money from airport seizures)
american statesman ^ | 6/20/11 | Helen Anders

A beaming girl's picture is encased in the snow globe, which is about the size of a grapefruit and rests atop an expensive-looking wooden base proclaiming, "Congratulations, graduate!"

Alas, the graduate never received this gift. It rests amid a sea of San Antonio snow globes — and a few globes from Denver, Chicago and Disney World — on the shelves of the Texas State Surplus Store at 6506 Bolm Road, off U.S. 183.

Because it's filled with liquid, you can't carry a snow globe onto an airplane. But some travelers haven't gotten the message, or maybe it slips their minds during their harried packing for summer vacation. Thus, rows and rows of snow globes sit at the surplus store, which gets its inventory not only from state surplus but also from items that were left behind or confiscated — "We say willfully surrendered," said cashier Roberta Siller — at airport security checkpoints in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, El Paso and other small airports.

In the five years this store has been open, its plane-related inventory has soared because of heightened security, according to director James Barrington. The airport stuff takes up most of one small room at the store. In 2010, the state's general fund was enriched $300,000 by the storefront's sales.

We should have a national board made up of ordinary citizens who administer justice on politicians, companies and other assorted douchbags who prey on people this way. They’re say would be final provided it didnt violate the constitution.

So I can’t bring a snowglobe on a plane but it’s okay for me to bring a Pakistani-trained jihadist on any plane I want.

Right.

some years back I remember seeing a state selling bulk lots of knives on ebay (I think california) that were taken by tsa and turned over to the state. It was pretty grim, as I assumed some of the knives were gifts or had been with their owners many years.

Because it's filled with liquid, you can't carry a snow globe onto an airplane.

I think this wouldn't be the case if it is checked in as luggage.

You can’t tell me that the “lots” of multitools and pocket knives on ebay aren’t TSA related.

They already have. Last year, my wife mailed a package home from California to avoid the $35 fee for additional baggage. It didn't show for three weeks.

When it finally did, half the stuff was missing. The local post office wasn't even interested in taking a report.

A once great institution stocked with employees from the third world has now adopted third world values. Surprise, surprise!

It’s getting close to time to separate ourselves from these people...
Whether that means driving them into their own enclaves where they can’t bother us, or making our own underground within the system...

I remember that guy. He even had a seller ID of something like “TSA guy” or something like that.

How long before they confiscate human beings because they contain fluid?

Stop bitching and drive.

My business takes me to the Mideast, but I never thought to simply driving there.

What a great idea.

Find a barge and see how many laps you can make. I know there is a bridge somewhere, I saw a car with a Hawaiian tag on it. LOL

Stop bitching and drive.

Okay, I have had it with all of you 'just drive' people. What if you live in Washington and you would like to visit your family in Baton Rouge, and you only have one week? Thanks to the Obama economy, hubby had to take a job far from home. We fly or don't go. Kids will probably get molested. If we don't fight this, just give up and drive, we lose.

Take a pizz before you take a flight. Reduce the dreaded liquid content.

I agree with sportutegrl, it doesn't matter if you need to fly for business, to see family, or just for the hell of it. What the feds have forced on us is tyranny and to “quit bitching and drive” is to accept it.

The last time I flew to Vegas, a couple and four kids convinced me to drive. You could not pay me to put up with all that snot blowing, crying, screaming, and running up the isles, never again. But as to current events, if enough people stop flying changes will be made.
