The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday that it plans to ban the sale of the most toxic rat and mouse poisons, as well as most loose bait and pellet products to residential customers. The goal is to better protect children, pets and wildlife. These changes are essential to reduce the thousands of accidental exposures of children that occur every year from rat and mouse control products and also to protect household pets, said Steve Owens, assistant administrator for EPAs Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. The EPA also will require that all rat and mouse poisons

“... always expecting to be hit...”
We rescued a German Shorthaired Pointer that had been abused. She had similar reactions. Poor thing would freak if she saw a man’s shoe. She also would bolt if someone had a cigarette or lit a match. We could only imagine what she had gone through in the six months prior to us adopting her. Sad!
Bump,
Yes, that makes sense. Only in that it is what government does, it does.
That is no small trick, here.
The poisons rely on getting the rodents to eat them--which means they are bait. Sorta seems like an invitation to dinner to bait them, where something in the fabric softeners just keeps them out (repellent effect). I'll opt for the latter, but I still think people should have an option.
When the whole country is knee deep in mice & rats & plague of Biblical proportions is attacking the residents of the USA, then perhaps someone in the EPA will get a clue.
In the 1970s, the FDA banned Red Dye No. 2 for use in rat poison after some studies found that large doses could cause cancer in rats.”
That is exactly why the average USA citizen no longer trusts it’s government. Government workers are beyond stupid.
Watch out! Kitty will bite your head off.
When tested on laboratory rats, they were found to be toxic.
Used to use peanut butter in my electronic mouse hotels (they check in and get a GOOD night's sleep) but it leaves a gooey mess on the metal plates inside which tends to collect dust/fuzz/otherassortedcrap and starts shorting across. Now I use pieces of stale cookie. No gooey mess, and the honored guests love it too. Victor makes both a small version for mice and a bigger version that rats get a charge out of.
Did I mention that it kills chipmunks too? Toss a hunk of walnut in it...
My tulips are looking for a place to order some!
They are located in Washington...
Mice, whether half dead or all dead have a special reserved place at our house. We have this special underground swimming pool whose secret entrance is via a small above-ground pool contained in a circular/ovate white porcelain device. The mouse is introduced into the above ground pool. Next, the secret pool transportation device is activated and the mouse swirls around for a bit before sliding out of sight into the special passageway that leads to the underground swimming pool. Not a single one of them has ever complained about the facilities. ;-)
Ummmm... Nope!
What, walnuts, chipmunks, or Chipmunk Zappers?
Unfortunately they do not make an electronic Bambi zapper, but if they did, bet you'd use one to protect those tulips!
Note, if using the electronic rodent hotel outdoors as a haven for misplaced chipmunks, remember that the internal electronics does not like the damp. That includes rain, mist, and dew..
Rat poison, Edison bulbs, TSP in detergent.....I swear it’s amazing we have survived all this time before this bunch gained control. The Nanny State on Steroids.
I sincerely hope that whomever the next President is gets rid of this whole unelected bureaucracy structure. It’s a freaking nightmare!
Lisa Jackson is the top porker feeding at the trough at EPA
Shila J’s EPA takes much needed action to Reduce American risk, by bold actions to better protect children, pets, rats, mice, aphids, snails, and assorted wildlife. Sam Slugbait, assistant administrator for EPAs Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention reportedly noted, “If the average American weren’t hopelessly incompetent this sort of vital regulation wouldn’t be so important.” Federal Certification for exterminators licensing boards for Pest Professional will assist these organizations to shoulder the new responsibilities.
Rab & the Natural Resources Defense Council can but rejoice for such a benevolent concerned and caring governmental agency.
***The EPA administrators may not realize how hard it is to get rid of rats once they get started,***
I once had a barn infested with rats. I used a popular warfarin bait, and within a week I had killed 45 rats.
I like warfarin baits!
It's really amazing that the rodent control people have come up with a product that D-constipates rats..
Yes but I'll bet the EPA doesn't.
"In 2008, EPA gave producers of rat and mouse poisons until June 4, 2011 to research, develop and register new products that are safer for children, pets and wildlife. Those new products have enclosed bait delivery systems and less toxic baits but still provide effective rodent control, the EPA said."
Yeah, like "phosphate-free" diswasher detergent is "effective."
