Herman Cain jumps to second among Republican candidates, according to Zogby poll
Yahoo News ^

Posted on 05/24/2011 3:15:30 PM PDT by mandaladon

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain placed a surprising second in a Zogby poll of likely Republican primary voters released Tuesday.

The poll measured support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who says he will not run, at 17 percent. Cain was preferred by 14 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul by 10 percent.

The results place Cain well ahead of many leading candidates, and come on the heels of a strong performance in Fox News’ May 5 primary debate in South Carolina. Cain was one of five participants.

Candidates widely considered frontrunners all received less than ten percent support.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was supported by 9 percent of respondents and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich by 7 percent. [ For complete coverage of politics and policy, go to Yahoo! Politics ]

Businessman Donald Trump, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels were all supported by four percent.

Zogby also asked respondents to select the candidates that they would never vote for.

Trump led the “never” field with 50 percent, followed by Gingrich at 36 percent, Palin at 36 percent, Huckabee at 34 percent, Paul at 32 percent, and Romney at 27 percent.

The poll was administered online, a different method than used in most scientific polls. There were 1,377 respondents and a calculated margin of error of +/- 2.7 percent.

I missed Cain on Fox News Sunday, what exactly did he say that has Krauthammer in a tizzy? I know Krauthammer is a beltway guy but it is already being used against Cain by the RINOS. Thanks.

Even without Republicans signing up as Democrats and vice-versa, the poll still rests on the assumption that people who voluntarily and without solicitation sign up for an online poll are going to vote in the same proportions as voters in actual elections. The bias is obvious even without respondent deception.

Absolutely, the fact that it’s a self-selected sample makes it useless. I was merely pointing out that even Zogby’s claim that the self-selected sample had 38% Democrats, 35% Republicans and 37% Independents (or whatever) is risible.

I ask people to be objective when they look at this poll. For starters the “science” of political polling went out the window a long time ago.

This poll is total garbage, anybody that believes it should have their head examined! I have no problem with a poll that shows Cain doing better, but even forgetting Cain for a moment, the rest of the poll is also truly garbage.

This poll is total crapola...case closed

Even though the other day when Hush Limbaugh was talking about potential GOP candidates, HUSH didn’t say a word about Cain, he was pushing Pawlenty and Romney pretty hard...pissed me off.

Two reasons I'm done with Rush--Pawlenty and Romney.

Rush has gone establishment.

The GOP establishment will have to get behind Cain. They're too filled with white guilt not to. Cain is in the cat bird's seat. He knows it, and they know it. For him to be polling this well this early has to scare them to death. An affirmative action conservative--it's a beautiful thing.

Exactly. Which is why we have started to see the "gotcha" questions in the media and the talk of "scandals" from trolls on FR. It was inevitable, really. The GOP establishment is in the process of trying to figure out how to neutralize Herman.

“At the time of the drafting and ratification of the United States constitution,
the definition of natural born citizen, combined both the principles of jus soli and jus sanguinis.”

Yes, you are right. Brain fart on my part. I had in mind the Juan McCain situation where he was technically born outside the US but since it was a naval base he is still a NBC.

It would be a good thing for us as a nation to set in stone that NBC does in fact mean born on the soil to two citizen parents. Also the entity to confirm this status and rights of states to object if there is a question mark.

Unless of course we are ok with satan worshiping commies being eligible for president....

"I agree. "Right of return" is a fiction and not an American issue in any case. Not our problem to begin with. Cain is helped by the fact that probably fewer than one in ten Americans at large have any idea what the term means either."

I still have no idea what "Right of Return" is. It sounds like an unfinished sentence.

I was impressed with Mr Cain that he admitted he didn't know what it was and made a point of getting informed about it. That's what I would expect from a leader. Mr Cain admitted his ignorance whereas our dearest leader would have blamed others. Oh, wait, he wouldn't have been asked that question unless it was WH approved.

So far we have seen how Mr Cain deals with a problem. Honestly.

not many heard about 0'bama outside of Chicago. $$$ helped him get where he is.

No one heard about Sarah. In only 4 months people were voting for her (indirectly through Mc Cain)Her personality and wisdom have kept her alive in our lives. She's been active. She has not wasted her time licking her wounds.

No reason the same can't happen with Mr Cain. I don't know much about him and I'm not going to cut him off just because of something that could easily be corrected by him.

Maybe some of us are tired of professional politicians.

After 0'bama, anyone can run and win. (I hope this doesn't sound like an insult to Sarah and Herman) We place extremely high standards to the ones trying to run now yet we forget how low we have stooped with the latest.

If God Himself ran, He'd lose.

I was disappointed in Cain's foreign policy understanding, considering he is running for the most important foreign policy position in the world.

Considering the field of candidates running, or considered running, Cain would be my second choice. Bachmann being my first.

It sure seems Bachmann is being rejected because of her gender. If this is true, why is this happening? We know the left certainly is threatened by her for two reasons. The left is threatened by a woman running against their black man...redirecting the all-so-nurturing and compassionate vote (you know...the one’s that feel obligated to accept anything and everything, because rejection is such an strifeful thing to do.) toward Bachmann and away from Obama and it will make them feel good about themselves to support the first woman president...another notch in their “nurture” headboard, so to speak. Reason number 2, that the left will attack any woman opposition ferociously - they have to appear to be the “woman's” party - they have to dupe them into believing in their party...these are votes people. Even though they've done the most damage to women's health both spiritually and physically and deconstructed the American family to the point where it is certainly an unnatural and disordered entity in the eyes of the state. I believe that if Bachmann was nominated, the left would put up Hillary.

The right seems to be threatened by Bachmann, also - especially the establishment, but certainly also many on this site. The right is threatened by a “woman” actually holding the reigns of their wagon...driving their train...leading the way. And from what I see, the only reason the establishment GOP would ever support Bachmann, is if she already had undeniable proof she would win if she ran...and they would be gritting their teeth the whole time privately, while patting themselves on the back publicly for enabling the first woman president.

I'll get behind Cain, if I have to. But this clearly shows how the right is really afraid of women. Bachmann is undeniably more qualified and more conservative and essentially better suited for the job - it is apparent the right isn't ready to make history. Still following in that respect. I do thank God that we'll have someone in the running to beat Romney and other RINOs, that's for sure. We could do a lot worse than Cain...and we may still.

The American people don't know this. I would think 80 percent of ALL voters in ALL large urban areas (200,000 and up) support Obama.
