Military: What's the U.S. Navy doing naming a ship after a leftist activist? If it wants to honor American Hispanics, there are scores of military heroes more worthy than Cesar Chavez.
Apparently, even the military isn't immune to being reimaged into the Obama world view. It was announced Tuesday that Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, a former Democratic governor of Mississippi, had chosen to name a Navy cargo ship under construction in San Diego after the migrant labor leader.
Chavez will join aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, astronauts Alan Shepard and Wally Schirra, and assassinated civil rights hero Medgar Evers, whose names adorn other such military transports.
Does a labor agitator belong in that company?
When 80% of Colorado voters in 2002 opposed a referendum to establish "Cesar Chavez day," even majority-Hispanic counties joined in voting no.
Maybe that was because, as the Arizona Republic's Ruben Navarrette Jr. reported years ago, for Chavez, the union came before even his fellow Hispanics.
Chavez "was as effective a surrogate for the INS (the Immigration and Naturalization Service, since merged into the Department of Homeland Security) as ever existed," according to Navarrette.
"Indeed, Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union he headed routinely reported, to the INS, for deportation, suspected illegal immigrants who served as strikebreakers or refused to unionize," Navarrette noted. Chavez even offered to post his own union goons as border guards to keep non-unionized Mexicanos from crossing the border into California.

The Spanish newscasts tonight are reporting this as 1) a triumph for them, like they won some kind of prize in a contest they never entered, and 2) a clever trick they put over on the gringos.
Is this decision left up to one man?
I have no idea
Admiral Rickover was once asked why the Navy was naming submarines after politicians instead of fish. He answered “Fish don’t vote.”

Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers Movement
Probably no movement among Latinos received more national attention than the struggle by Cesar Chavez and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) to organize the migrant farm workers. Calling for a nationwide boycott of California grapes and a March from Delano, in Californias Central Valley, to the state capitol in Sacramento-among other actions-Chavez and the ATWA combined issues of race and labor relations into a single movement.
The Tale of the Raza
LUIS VALDEZ
Chicano author Luis Valdez assessed the larger impact of this struggle for La Raza (The Race), as well as for the workers.
The revolt in Delano is more than a labor struggle. Mexican grape pickers did not rnarch 300 miles to Sacramento, carrying the standard of the Virgin de Guadalupe, merely to dramatize economic grievances. Beyond unionization, beyond politics, there is the desire of a New World race to reconcile the conflicts of its 500-year-old history. La Raza is trying to find its place sun it once worshipped as a Supreme Being.
La Raza, the race, is the Mexican people.
...Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, a former Democratic governor of Mississippi...
This is nothing. Wait for the uproar when the Navy announces the commissioning of the USS Harvey Milk...
The answer to this question is easy: the United States has a Marxist government and that Marxist government gets to decide all sorts of things from the naming of ships to where companies are allowed to do business. It will get worse.
The why doesn’t La f**king Raza march it’s bigoted, pugnacious and racist butts back down to Mexico City and overthrow their own God damned government instead of mouthing off here in my country? I don’t need to hear their bs and neither does my country. I’m sick of my tax dollars being used to support Mexican bigots.
Which politicians had boats named after them during the Rickover years?
Naming ships after folks that would blow em out of the water if given a chance to do so....
SECNAV SUCKS !
Perhaps the ship is to be named after a man who was noted for, among other things, his violent antipathy toward illegal aliens. Surely that is the reason!
Then isn't anyone who struggles, militates, and fights -- or even just "represents" -- for The Race, ipso facto and perforce, a Race-ist?
That would make it a secret-squirrel, double-bonus lottery win for the anti-FROBL crowd.
Don't tell anybody! lol
I can hear it now...
When a “real” Navy ship comes alongside (making its approach) for a underway replenishment evolution...These ships make an announcement over the 1MC (all ships spaces, inside and outside)...
“Welcome alongside the USNS Cesar Chavez, prepare to receive shot-lines fore and aft!”
I guess from a historical standpoint, I would not be surprised to see future USNS ships named after folks like:
Usama bin Laden
Adolf Hitler
Benito Mussolini
Kind of like a history lesson, but as far as people like Chavez...I’m not so sure it’s history they are trying to foist upon folks who are directly working with ships like this...
A ships name is about history, and it is up to the crew(s) to make it something that is important to them and their mission...You get a reputation, and sometimes people either want to serve on the ship by requesting that duty station, or you get stuck on it because of the needs of the Navy...Like most service branches...
Its what you make of it...Who knows, this may become one of the best run, most efficient and safe replenishment ships in the fleet...
As much as names like John Murtha, and Jimmy Carter mess with my political sensibilities, that is still a ship of the line, and it and its crew deserve the upmost respect and support for manning it as do others on more prestigious ships...
Just my opinion...;-)
