The Spanish newscasts tonight are reporting this as 1) a triumph for them, like they won some kind of prize in a contest they never entered, and 2) a clever trick they put over on the gringos.

Is this decision left up to one man?

Admiral Rickover was once asked why the Navy was naming submarines after politicians instead of fish. He answered “Fish don’t vote.”

ON THE INTERNET:

www3.niu.edu/~td0raf1/history261/nov1914.htm

SNIPPET - quote:

Cesar Chavez and the Farm Workers Movement

Probably no movement among Latinos received more national attention than the struggle by Cesar Chavez and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) to organize the migrant farm workers. Calling for a nationwide boycott of California grapes and a March from Delano, in California’s Central Valley, to the state capitol in Sacramento-among other actions-Chavez and the ATWA combined issues of race and labor relations into a single movement.

The Tale of the Raza
LUIS VALDEZ

Chicano author Luis Valdez assessed the larger impact of this struggle for La Raza (The Race), as well as for the workers.

The revolt in Delano is more than a labor struggle. Mexican grape pickers did not rnarch 300 miles to Sacramento, carrying the standard of the Virgin de Guadalupe, merely to dramatize economic grievances. Beyond unionization, beyond politics, there is the desire of a New World race to reconcile the conflicts of its 500-year-old history. La Raza is trying to find its place sun it once worshipped as a Supreme Being.

La Raza, the race, is the Mexican people.

This is nothing. Wait for the uproar when the Navy announces the commissioning of the USS Harvey Milk...

What's the U.S. Navy doing naming a ship after a leftist activist?

The answer to this question is easy: the United States has a Marxist government and that Marxist government gets to decide all sorts of things from the naming of ships to where companies are allowed to do business. It will get worse.

Perhaps the ship is to be named after a man who was noted for, among other things, his violent antipathy toward illegal aliens. Surely that is the reason!

I can hear it now...

When a “real” Navy ship comes alongside (making its approach) for a underway replenishment evolution...These ships make an announcement over the 1MC (all ships spaces, inside and outside)...

“Welcome alongside the USNS Cesar Chavez, prepare to receive shot-lines fore and aft!”

I guess from a historical standpoint, I would not be surprised to see future USNS ships named after folks like:

Usama bin Laden

Adolf Hitler

Benito Mussolini

Kind of like a history lesson, but as far as people like Chavez...I’m not so sure it’s history they are trying to foist upon folks who are directly working with ships like this...

A ships name is about history, and it is up to the crew(s) to make it something that is important to them and their mission...You get a reputation, and sometimes people either want to serve on the ship by requesting that duty station, or you get stuck on it because of the needs of the Navy...Like most service branches...

Its what you make of it...Who knows, this may become one of the best run, most efficient and safe replenishment ships in the fleet...

As much as names like John Murtha, and Jimmy Carter mess with my political sensibilities, that is still a ship of the line, and it and its crew deserve the upmost respect and support for manning it as do others on more prestigious ships...

Just my opinion...;-)

It is nothing new. They have been doing that since they named CV-42.FDR
