(Vanity) Anyone doing anything special to celebrate the 100th Birthday of the 1911? (March 29)

Posted on 03/22/2011 5:26:59 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

The 100th anniversary of John Moses Browning's work of brilliance is March 29th. The gun which won WWI, WWII, Korea, was in Vietnam, and is still to this day one of the most popular platforms for guns.

Curious what things, if any, people were doing to celebrate this work of brilliance/art.

I am putting time aside that day to get out to shoot mine.

What is the least expensive make and model based on a 1911 frame out there? I'd love to have one, and I have the wife's official blessing to pick up a new handgun (gotta keep the domestic peace, after all), but she isn't going to let me toss down a grand on one........!

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

I guess I’ll put my COLT .22 conversion on my AMT Hardballer

Any idea if one of those could be found for the longslide version of the Hardballer?

I do not own one, but I have heard nothing but positive things about 1911’s from Rock Island Armory, made by Armscor in the Phillipines.

From what I have heard, the build quality and function is comparable to 1911’s costing twice as much. They are simply flawless guns from everything I have heard.....literally not a negative thing about them.

You can find them on Gunbroker for $379.

You can buy a new copy for under $400 currently, and it will take the surplus government seven round mags and the eight rounders too. I think you can still get the 20 round mag for them. Bersa is making a nice reproduction in their American Classics line, but there is another brand for around $380, IIRC. I’ll look it up and get back to ya.

Funny you mention that. While all the gun-control stuff was happening a few years back, I lamented that there might not be any 1911, hundred year anniversary models.

And what do you know? The 1911 is more popular than ever.

It’s one of those truly American things like Apple Pie.

I bought my very first 1911 pistol this month!

It is a modest, 400-dollar Rock Island GI model, but I love it!

Happy 100th, 1911!

Might be a good time to buy one. Anybody having a 100th anniversary sale?

GOOD QUESTION! If I can find a reliable one for around $350, I intend to buy two this time. Someone is always buying my 1911s when I take them to the range. Odd that ...

I own 1911’s from Colt, Springfield, and Rock Island. RI very high quality, no frills, recommend additional mags form quality distributor. . Make sure you put 200-300 rounds through any new weapon before you trust it for reliability.
