President Obama on Sunday called for gun-rights advocates and proponents of gun control to find common ground two months after the shooting which killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
The Arizona Daily Star published an op-ed by Obama on Sunday calling for stronger restrictions on gun sales to buyers suspected of mental instability.
“A man our Army rejected as unfit for service; a man one of our colleges deemed too unstable for studies; a man apparently bent on violence, was able to walk into a store and buy a gun,” Obama wrote of Jared Loughner, the man accused of shooting Giffords and 19 other people, six fatally.

That is interesting, isn't it. That would have been a good chance to strike out at shall issue concealed carry laws. Hassan was the holder of a Texas Concealed Handgun License. Practiced a lot too by all reports. At a very "redneck" kind of range too. But did those nasty racist Texans forbid the Arab/Muslim from using their range? No, and that would have been "off message'. So too would the fact that the man had spouted Jihad for a long time before the event yet no one took him to task for it. Including both his superiors and the Iman of the local Mosque.
As it happens, I took the shooting test for my most recent renewal of my own Texas CHL at the same range. The folks who I took the course under no longer use that range, but it has nothing to do with the shooting, rather a much nice and more suitable for instruction range opened up nearby and they use that for their other courses and the the shooting portion of their CHL courses.. They teach some of those right on Ft. Hood. Had one yesterday in fact. :) As it happens, I bought a new carry gun yesterday. A KelTec PF9. Can hardly wait to go shoot it on Tuesday. (The range where I'm at right now is not open on Monday) Although I don't expect to shoot it all that much.. it's very light and is a 9mm. More oompf than those little .380s, although not as concealable. I also had two knee replacement surgeries in the same hospital that they took some of his victims to for treatment, including the civilian DoD cop who tried to stop him, but missed. I even had the same physical therapist as she did.
Shortly after the shooting I read that legally after 90 days, if she is unable to substantially fulfill her duties, she needs to be replaced.
I don't see how common ground is possible. What proponents of gun control intend to do we can not allow, and I don't even own a gun.
How about this for gun control? No guns for liberal whackos. You vote at least 50% democrat on a ballot, you lose the right own a gun.

Is the President saying that this is automatic grounds for depriving someone of the Second Amendment rights?
Obama ... recognized the Second Amendment grants individuals the right to bear arms.
Wrong Obummer! The second amendment does no such thing. Read it. It says: "The right of the people ... shall not be infringed", and nothing like "The people shall have the right..." or "The right of keeping ... is hereby granted to the people". Nope, the very grammar of the sentence indicates that the right exists, independent of the Constitution and it's second amendment.
So where does the right come from? Well here's what Jefferson, with a little help from Franklin and Adams, had to say on that:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights...
