Theres a supermoon on the rise next week. And according to Internet buzz, itll bring a scary surge in natural disasters around the globe.
No way, Jose: Numerous scientists have reassured the public that there's absolutely no correlation between disturbances on Earth and this rare lunar phase.
But the moon itself? That's another story.
On March 19, Earths satellite will be at its closest point to our planet in 18 years -- a mere 356,577 kilometers away. The event -- also called a lunar perigee -- was dubbed a "supermoon" by astrologer Richard Nolle back in the 1970s. The term is used to describe a new or full moon at 90% or more of its closest orbit to Earth. Next week, it will be at 100%.

lunar perigee happens every month.
I swear FR is turning into a loony bin over the past few days over this earthquake.
And we have the nerve to rip on the public schools and diploma mills when we take nonsense like this seriously?
I think it has to do with a full moon at it’s closest orbit to earth?
The two, happening at the same time?

These nuts don’t stop.
I’m heading out to stock up on TP as we speak.
Hey I didn’t get the article from Alex Jones prison planet or anything. Because scientists have predicted a moonquake. I suspect it is because Roseann Barr bought a ticket to the moon and she will jump around a bit but nothing will happen.
On another note did the solar flares cause communication satellite outages in S Africa as they were warned a few weeks ago?
I fail to see what direction the sun strikes the moon has to do with anything. The moon’s mass isn’t increasing.
May cause moonquakes but not earthquakes? Give me a break.
Awww c’mon man don’t let elementary science get in the way of a good fruit loop theory.
I hear mars will look as big as the moon in the sky next month too.
“Waiting for Supermoon”
If theres a quake on the moon and no one is around to feel it, would it really shake?
Will it affect the production of Moonpies. That would be disastrous.
The news media is more likely to quote astrolgers than astronomers;this tells us the reporters and editors care nothing for the science that has made life better;they would rather pander to primal fears and false beliefs.
“I hear mars will look as big as the moon in the sky next month too.”
Does this make Uranus look big too? 8^ )
Oh I didnt mean that to you personally.
I’ve just seen so much of this stuff passed around here over the past few days, that I could not believe what I was reading.
...
There is a solar “storm” that was, I assume, suppose to happen next Tues or such, and the only thing that may do is just cause a lot of pretty Aurora, and at worse cause some power grid to overload like what happen in Canada in the 70s.
I haven’t heard about any satellites going down in the previous few weeks though.
You have a choice to read it or not.
I LIKE CHOICES.
“Earths satellite will be at its closest point to our planet in 18 years.”
And you all remember what happened 18 years ago, right? Plague, pestilence, famine, fire and brimstone, poisonous rains falling from the sky, deadly monsters stalking the earth, Bill Clinton moving into the Oval Office. That’s why the mere mention of the year 1993 strikes fear in the hearts of mankind.
And it’s a bizarre but 100% true scientifical fact that a full moon weighs no more than a half moon.
