WHY isn't our American media reporting?....this is insane....all these channels and still we can't get live reports....
I hope this isn't some kind of planned blackout so people won't panic....I'd rather know whats coming than be a sitting duck...
we're not on the coast but 350 miles inland....I have kids in Edmunds,Wa and Portland,Or as well as other family...

No doubt a large release of radiation during the explosion will hamper further efforts to get control of this. Probably why the radiation team is leaving from Tokyo. Those still working need to be pulled out due to exposure rates. They are getting 1 year exposure in one hour now.
To: Windflier
It does not matter what kind of reactor it is. Their is always something that can take it out. It is only a matter of different probabilities.

Does anyone have serious information on how far the effects of an explosion/ meltdown wil carry. From earlier official information, worst case is still a LOCAL problem. We're talking a few miles radius. No threat to the US, 5000 miles away, or even other portions of Japan.
This is NOT Chernobyl.

As I posted, we have been through decades of continuous layoffs at all the news agencies and networks, following purchases by major corps. There is no longer in existence the network of reporters many of us grew up with.
I grew up in an age when the networks and agencies had veteran news staff worldwide, the only delay would have been a few minutes to get Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley to the studio.
CNN finally breaking in with reference to explosion.

still investigating and we don’t want to provide false info but we are closely monitoring the radiation. Cause is still under investigation.

As a summary:
Fukushima 1 reactor #1 external building concrete cover is gone. #1 is an old 460 MW
boiling water reactor (BWR).
The state of the primary containment (see link on BWR) remains unknown.

Fox nuclear expert said if it’s true the ceiling went, that’s a worst case scenario and it’s in full meltdown...I think we already figured that out...

I hope this isn't some kind of planned blackout so people won't panic I doubt it. They did the same while Egypt burnt and Kaddaffi set fire to oil fields.
