Tsunami waves began rolling into Hawaii early Friday, with readings of between 6 and 8 feet expected in some areas following the giant earthquake that struck Japan.
Communities along much of the U.S. West Coast were under tsunami warnings, too.
The first impact in Hawaii was felt shortly after 3:07 a.m. local time (8:07 a.m. ET), according to Hawaii State Civil Defense, which issued a tsunami warning.
At 3:30 a.m., television images in Honolulu showed an increase in water coming ashore.
The National Weather Service said the waves could hit Oregon and California between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. local time (10:15-10:30 a.m. ET).
Honolulu is planning for several contingencies, because it is not certain how large the waves could be and where they may rush inland, Mayor Peter Carlisle told CNN.
"It is a very difficult situation to confront," Carlisle said.
Hawaiian Public Radio news director Bill Dorman told CNN some roads were closed as a precaution. CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said he expected the waves to first strike the island of Kauai.
Hawaiian emergency officials reminded residents that tsunami evacuation maps can be found in front of their telephone directories. People were being advised not to make unnecessary phone calls and a coastal evacuation was conducted.

It was a false alarm since the consequences they were warning about did not occur.
How do they know the wave was from the tsunami and not a big wave part of a train? It didn’t act like a tsunami wave.
Yea - when you’re standing on the seashore and there’s no sea - run hard and pray harder.
Agreed—not funny.
Holy mackerel. Incredible video (better with no audio - sorry, but newscasters grate on my nerves).
Not since leprosy was cured.
“what would we miss?”
How about our money that that pays for most of the welfare states. Washington takes from us and doles out to most of the rest. I’d like it back.
And no...it wasn't a false alarm. What consequences were you "warned" about from official sources that did not occur?
A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.
Don't see anything in there that speaks about certainty of consequences.
I question authority. That’s what I do. Sorry if that offends you.
Don’t confuse the chicken littles with the facts. A 500 ft wall of water did not oblitarate the entire island chain so it was obviously a false alarm!
The TV reporting has been pitiful; except for the horrific video of the Japanese tsunami chaos; FOX has ‘radio reporters’ calling in and they are unintelligble - just chit chatting with valley girl expressions - “like, you know, I mean” - no facts or figures - just guesswork.
Jeez, guys, grow up. It was an obvious joke.
Sooner or later...idiocy gets you what you deserve.
You have a nice day too my friendly friend.
Longer version (over 5 minutes) of the video you posted, without news channel talking overlay.

“..NOTE TO SELF: When you see the ocean pull back 300+ meters leaving the reef exposed, RUN LIKE HELL for high ground!
Anyone ever read “Lucifer’s Hammer” by Jerry Pournelle? There’s a tidal wave description in that book that is hair raising. Caused by an asteroid strike out in the Pacific.
Fiction, yes, but terrifying nonetheless...
‘... a highrise, looming like a giant flyswatter..’
That was CNN
I watched some of it on the big TV screen at McDonalds
Ok, I’m looking. What does he use as his source? God, himself, science? Sorry didn’t read his sit that far yet.
Waiting for the next shoe to drop...
Hawaii's Governor Abercrombie announces to the public that although no tsunami waves came within 2 miles of Hawaii's Hall of Records, President Obamas records were none the less washed out to sea. Said Abercrombie, "Sorry folks, we'll never know. I was just about to turn my full attention to this. Oh well..."
