Putting gas prices aside for a moment, what are you paying for a gallon of milk?

We just paid more than $4.00 a gallon yesterday.

I saw a sigh at the local Checkers ( my dog loves their ‘value champ burger”) - - sign said “no tomatoes on burgers” due to shortages ... My dog doesn't care - but it's a sign of the times. What Checkers is really saying is they won't pay the higher price for tomatoes... they're still available, just pricier. Anyone else running into this?

Chickens are the way to go if you eat a lot of eggs! Once you have eaten a “fresh” egg, you will wonder about those store bought eggs! My “girls” are worth their weight in gold. lol

Milk is $3.49 a gallon here in NC......and as of yesterday, average gas price was $3.50 Oh and dont get me started on the price of butter! Store brands are averaging around $2.99 lb......ughhhhhhh

"...bagged salad was the same price it has been for months."

Probably because it was the same bag of salad they've had for months ;-)

Buy organic, it lasts forever. I have a 1/2 gallon that I bought last week and the expiration date is 4/11. We were forever throwing out half finished cartons and now we use all of it.

The older the cheese is the less sugar it is going to have, or at least have in a form that can cause problems.

I count on something that's at least 9 months old ~ and just about every cheddar of any quality on sale at Safeway is going to be that old ~ even if it's not marked.

Cream cheese is out. Blue cheese is out. SOME Swiss is a problem ~ look for the age ~

Something to watch for with cheese is the natural anti-cholesterol chemicals. Baby cows need them so they can drink their mothers' high cholesterol dairy product! Those chemicals are still in there, so if you eat a lot of cheese and also take an anticholesterol drug you might "overdose" and what will happen is you will get intramuscular pain, and recurring but intense pain in your feet and hands.

You can cut back on your medicine or your cheese in that case!

Nothing, milk is for baby calves. Sometimes I use it for glue on glass I may break.

Most of the fruits & veggies around here do not come from Mexico.

That may be true but the loss of almost 100% of the Mexico, South Texas and Florida crops has a huge impact upon the total availability in the US.

We have Aldi’s here in Florida but I don’t think the price will be under $2.00.

Varies week to week, anywhere between 3.89 and 4.99. as even gone up at Walmart.

However, there is no correlation to gas prices. VERY few buy milk in quantities of 20, 30, 40 gallons twice a week. Schools and other institutions maybe. Gas prices rising IS the story and it will devastate an already suffering economy in many ways, including raise prices on everything else, another way the price of milk does not have a correlation.

In the one week between Jan. 30 and Feb. 6, the price paid to a farmer for a head of iceberg lettuce jumped from 57 cents each to $1.19, increasingly close to the price charged directly to shoppers in grocery stories, according to data compiled from U.S. Department of Agriculture reports by the Western Growers Association. A year ago, during the week of Feb. 21, the price per head of iceberg lettuce was 33 cents paid to the farmer.

For a 10-pound carton of vine-ripe tomatoes from Atlanta, the cost was about $31.25 as of Feb. 18. Just a month and a half prior, the price was $20 for tomatoes from Florida, according to USDA data.

Nice link - I'm growing my own tomatoes for the first time in years...

Actually, no. It is dated 'best by' for March 13, 2011.

Even for people living in apartments, condos, etc where they have little or no yard space they cand still grow some fresh veggies. You can even grow peppers in hanging containers, herbs in the topside of the hanger or in small pots. I've grown cucumbers using a side fence or string for runners.

“Beef prices I don’t even look at anymore and I don’t buy it either..... “

Get to know your butcher.

Look for cuts with the current day expiration date. Ask the burcher if he’ll give you a discount because he has to pull the meat off the cooler anyway. I get good cuts of meat for 50% off or more. Of course you’ll need to use it right away or freeze it.

Same thing with the fish guy. If you see a bunch of tuna or haddock in the case not moving, ask him if he’ll take half-price for a couple of pounds.

I picked up fresh cod yesterday for $2.69 a lb., normally $6.99 a lb.

The meat and fish guys are your best buddies when grocery shopping.

Stopped buying Aldi’s milk around Ohio/Michigan border as we ended up with several bad gallons. Now we just shop the sales.

Is that a plastic bucket with a hole in the bottom? Interesting - great idea. I have a fairly large yard - but container planting for some things appeals to me.
