The U.S. Navy was repositioning its heavy-hitting warships around North Africa tonight as America and Britain dramatically increased pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.
The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which had been on pirate-hunting duty off the coast of Somalia, has now steamed to the mouth of the Suez Canal in the Red Sea.
The deadly strike force aboard the nuclear-powered carrier is already within flying distance of Libya but the Enterprise is said to be heading closer to country and its rogue dictator.

Depends on what the real purpose of the mission is. If it's purely counter-piracy ops I'd agree. However, if the CSG is there for a limited duration and more to conduct "training" in a live environment, it's acceptable.I'm sure that you are right. The author of this piece of drivel seems to think that the "Enterprise" still carries the F-14 Tomcat. This makes you wonder what else he/she got wrong.
Figuring what the "real deal" must be, I assume that the Enterprise strike group is in transit to/from the Persian Gulf or Northern Indian Ocean in support of operations in Afghanistan & Iraq. She undoubtedly would be flying training missions during this interval, so investigating pirate sightings would be the thing to do.

The Brits are the driving force now and are in contact with the son. The old man will be gone and the son will assume the leadership.
Everything Obama does is mostly for show. I suspect he is out of the loop that includes the Brits, the Italians, possibly the French and the son and various Libyan political (tribal) and business types.
Hillary’s call for the old man to leave likely came after she was informed of what is really going on. She is at least a week and a hundred million $$$ late

Probably not in the cards, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if the USS Ronald Reagan sailed toward Libya? I can almost hear the Gipper saying, “There you go again!” to Colonel Bizarro.

The reporter used an old photo to formulate his story. He has no excuse but I bet that's why he mentioned them
This is the photo accompanying the article and you can plainly see some Tomcats on board.

Last I heard, the last Tomcat was broken up for scrap in 2009 or 10.
They were all destroyed, so Iran could never, ever get spare parts for theirs, either by accident or subterfuge.
There are none in storage in the boneyard.

"Still, the Enterprise - with its compliment of F-14 Tomcat fighters - is not the best candidate for a humanitarian aid mission."
As many have already alluded to, the F-14 has been out of use since about 2005. The enterprise is packed with F-18's and hopefully soon, F-35's in the near future. The Enterprise can be used to enforce the no fly zone while the Kearsage's Helos can be used for delivering relief supplies, etc. And, if need be deliver Marines to re-earn the Marmaluke sword.
From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli baby!

Do we not still have a Carrier Air Wing patrolling the Mediterranean? When I was in the Navy during the Reagan years, The Forrestal, Kennedy, and us the Saratoga would rotate 6th Fleet Med duties. Flight Ops off Libya's coast taunting the dirty Sierra Oscar Bravo was allot of what we did our six months there.

The US Military is going after the 10 - 14 Tons of mustard gas that Qaddaffi has failed to destroy. In 2003 Qaddaffi agreed to destroy the tons of mustard gas and the containers for delivery via scud missles. he achieved destroying the missles for delivery and attempted to destroy some of the mustard gas. But, he has failed to honor the commitments to the UN and the Us regarding the destruction of the mustard gas that was to be achieved by the end of 2011 as directed in the removing of embargo by the uS.
Okay something happened to make him change his mind
Okay on monday I typed in “mustard gas in Libya in yahoo browser” to find out what happened to the so called WMDs of Libya. the amount of mustard gas varies 44,000 containers, 10 tons 14, tons. So you can read about yourself if it has not been removed

*** Still, the Enterprise - with its compliment of F-14 Tomcat fighters ... Bwahahaha. Bone dead STUPID! *** You caught that too, what a bunch of maroons.
An easy search would have shown them this:
In the 1970s, Enterprise was refitted to handle F-14 Tomcats,
which operated from the ship from 1974 to 2001.
Maybe they had a deadline to meet ;-)

"USS Enterprise On Its Way To Libya..." What the media is not telling us is that Obama expressed his desire to speak directly to Captain Kirk to wish him good luck with the mission.

Aey Aey. Though we never called her that. I think that was a Forrestal nickname for us. We called her the Sweet 60 from Dixie.

Let the EU handle it.
Sorry, we have enough right now. There is no justification for this.

You answered my question. The Worlds Hot Spots may have shifted some since the 1970s and 80s, but I would think we would still want to maintain a Carrier Air Wing in the Med. But what do I know? There are people with lots of metal on their shoulders that are suppose to know where all the game pieces are suppose to be on the World Map at any given time.

Iran still uses the F-14...we should check to make sure those F-14s piggybacking on the Enterprise weren’t snuck on board by the Iranians.
