Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says the kind of uprisings taking place in the Middle East and North Africa could never happen in Russia, warning that the revolts risk bringing Islamist "fanatics" to power.
Mr. Medvedev's comments at a security meeting Tuesday sharply contrast with European countries' support for the pro-democracy protesters. He spoke in Russia's Northern Caucasus region, where Russia has been fighting a deadly Islamist rebel insurgency.
The Russian president said the Arab nations' uprisings could lead to decades of "fires" spreading Islamic extremism, adding that the Arab rebellions could have a "direct effect" on the situation in Russia. He said a similar scenario would not succeed in his country. No further details were available.
Protesters calling for reform have brought down governments in Tunisia and Egypt, and have sparked unrest in Libya, Bahrain, Yemen, Morocco and Jordan.
Given the legacy of Stalin, I have no doubt that such an uprising would not occur without a brutal ‘killing fields’ style crackdown....=.=
Look what happened in Syria and what is happening in Iran. Countries that warmed up to the US during the WOT are the ones taking the fall right now (this includes Libya). Iran and Syria have enough momentum to prevent an uprising.
Libya, however, needs to be liberated. Bush should have killed Quadaffi back in 2004 when we had the chance.
Go ahead. Make my day!
Nope. There will be no rebellion against the government in Moscow.
Somebody gets it.
I think Medvedev is making more sense than the degenerate western Democracies with respect to Islam.
But considering the growing population of Muslims in Moscow, the Islam Bomb is as likely to explode there as anywhere else.
The problem with these swine is once you let a few in, they can ONLY grow. They have plural marriages, they recruit and they kill any of their people who want to apostasize.
The only SURE way to make sure the Islam Bomb doesn’t go off is sweep the scum out of your country and ship them back to wherever they came from as soon as possible, or the Islam Bomb will either blow up or your children will live undeer Sharia.
Yeah, it seems the whole world wants to keep what Putin did to Chechnya very quiet.
There certainly won't be many Chechen terrorists spending quality time with their families.
No, because Russia is not an Islamic nation. However, in a few decades...
Russia 'may lose $10 bn' arms sales from Arab unrest - February 22, 2011 - Russia "was working on and already implementing arms contracts worth some $10 billion" in the affected countries. "Nothing can be ruled out in the current situation, and in the worst-case scenario, these plans may be wrecked...."
Well, since one of their heavily Islamic areas just decreed that all women, Muslim or not, must cover their hair - and nobody in Russia Central has objected - I’d say the Muslims will probably get their way without even bothering to riot.
I’m with Dmitri Medvedev on this one. Revolutions lead to no good.
They are the harbingers of tyranny. Just ask the Russians.
74 years of totalitarian Communist winter is plenty of experience. The revolutions in the Middle East could well bring Islamists to power.
I am a fan of freedom but not a fan of revolutions.
i dunno, maybe it's becuase all this muslim bullshit is being financed and promoted by the commies to begin with...
“Will never happen in Russia”? You mean “again”, don’t you Dmitri?
Well, Kadaffy is just mowing them down in the streets with no explanation necessary.
He is one brutal MF.
Perhaps somebody forgot to consult Czar Nicholas II?
Putin should consult with another Vlad, and I mean the one from Wallachia, not Lenin.
Russia is hoping to make up for these losses by selling weapons to Egypt and a overthrown Saudi Arabia.
The US should be invading Libya by now.
