The race for the 2012 Republican nomination for President is becoming more concrete. GOP candidates made their pitches to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington on Feb. 10-12 and a straw poll of attendees was taken. The Washington Post reports Rep. Ron Paul of Texas won the poll, with about 30 percent of the 3,742 ballots cast.
The poll doesn't say much as not one candidate received more votes than the other. Some of the biggest news from the weekend came from former vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin and she didn't even attend the conference. Palin hired former Bob Dole campaigner Michael Glassner as her chief of staff, signaling a possible run for the White House.
Now the speculation and discourse about Palin's politics will continue and gradually build to a formal announcement running for president (or not). Who would be Palin's ideal running mate should she win the Republican nomination? Here are some suggestions based upon traditional party tickets and even some like-minded individuals who would serve Republicans well in 2012.
Ron Paul would be ideal since he is from a southern state and can get a lot of voters in the huge Lone Star state. He could also galvanize more tea party voters and convince independents who lean to the right that Palin is a good idea. Paul will be 76 when the 2012 presidential election happens and then 80 when a potential first term is over. At least he'll only be vice president, but Paul will serve as a foil to Palin's youthful exuberance.
Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina is an excellent choice for Palin....

Keep him in New Jersey...
He was good enough to be senator for Ariz.
Well, if she can’t get Gen Petraeus, Allen West is my next choice.
They would look like Barbie and Ken.
But seriously, 1 insider, 1 outsider would be a good combo.
Establishment and conventional wisdom would hate it because they bring the minimum of six electoral votes to bear.
