Several sources familiar with the ongoing investigation tell WTOP fire and police investigators believe the radiator in Turton's 2008 BMW X5 was punctured when it rolled into a workbench. The halogen headlights, which emit a bluish light and illuminate the road better than conventional headlights, stayed on after the radiator was punctured.

She drives into the garage, hits a work bench is un concious and the anti freeze ignites on the HID lights? WTH? BMW makes good stuff - so I doubt antifreeze is gonna ignite on the HIDs.

Those headlights suck if a car or SUV is coming towards you with them on.

They can go ahead and flash all they want. If they blind me, I blind them!

So many times, I have to flip my rearview mirror because their studpid lights are blinding me.

Don’t know if this is true, but I had said that to someone and they said when I flip my rearview, it blinds the person behind me.

I said it’s better for me to be hit behind then me crashing head first into someone else.

Also, before this new headlight thing was stated, I always thought they had their brights on.

Look I have spent many hours researching this case. I can understand your issues with the headlights but that isn’t the subject of the article. I started thread and have much invested in finding the truth. Please move on.

The subject of this thread is a serious matter, and this thread has already gotten blog attention as a source of useful speculation. That site reports the White House and various federal agencies are paying attention.

Therefore, please divert discussion of your opinions regarding Xenon headlights to this chat thread:

Thanks for your cooperation.

...causing her inability to cope properly with the situation.

For instance, was she a diabetic that may have developed a quick onset deterioration that may have left her in a daze or unconscious and unable to escape the fire.

Could she have been an epileptic that experienced a higher level of seizure than she had experienced before?

Something caused this woman to ram the garage door if I remember correctly. I’m just wondering what may have caused her to operate the vehicle in that manner, and may have contributed to her not escaping the ensuing fire.

Oh wait, it was, therefore it's a free for all. Please continue to discuss these horrible blinding headlights!

Regarding Xenons:

They are white, not blue. They have a sharp cutoff (for the benefit of oncoming drivers, better than old pre-halogen headlights. Because of refraction effects, there is a slight blue tinge at the cutoff, which is what you perceive.

In my estimation, and the negative perceptions by oncoming drivers can be explained largely by social resentment, because these lights are associated with expensive cars, plus general ignorance perception. They are more noticeable because they are in the minority, and notice leads to annoyance, especially when combined with the wealth resentment psychology.

Is there anyone who owns a vehicle with Xenon headlights who finds Xenons in oncoming traffic annoying or impairing? I thought not, case closed. (I wish everyone had them.)

And as to the ass who thinks he needs to shine his brights because he doesn’t like my $2000 headlights, I ask: “Have you really thought through the consequences of blinding vehicles that are closing on yours at over 100 mph combined speed?”

I think those who complain about the headlights are related to those who will cut off or delay a used Mercedes worth $4000 with their $30,000 pickup truck, because they have wealth resentment issues.

Going waaaaaaay off topic here -- US DOT headlights, with their ca. 1928 beam pattern are awful to begin with, and that's brand-new, right out of the box. After a few years, when the plastic covers get clouded and pitted and the reflectors oxidize, they're about as illuminating as candlelight. The E-code (halogen) headlights used in Europe and the rest-of-the-world have a cutoff beam pattern designed not to blind oncoming drivers and throw light to the right of the car. They're many times better than DOT lights.

HID xenon headlights have been sold in the US for 18 years and people have been complaining about them for 18 years. As the price falls, they're becoming standard or optional equipment on more and more cars, and not just on luxury brands. For 2011, the "Touring Elite" model of the Honda Odyssey minivan is equipped with HID headlights as standard equipment.

If you're old enough to have cataracts and have an older car with clouded, stone-pitted headlights, it's probably not a great idea to stare at the brighter lights of an oncoming car, whether it's HID or halogen headlight equipped.

To get back to the OT, I don't think the People's Republic of Washington DC has provided a plausible explanation of why that woman died in her BMW in her garage.

Yes the headlights are in the article but debating the good or bad of the effect of them on ones driving is not. If you want to discuss how they can cause the fire be my guest. Please understand this is a big story and many are watching this thread. Please do not clutter it.

Another photo of the vehicle, Turton Car Fire Caused by Low-Speed Crash, Police Say

A D.C. fire investigator takes photos of a burned-out BMW in a garage on the 800 block of A Street Southeast on Monday morning.

It’s quite possible that the victim was maneuvering the car and came in contact with some kind of flammable chemical materials,” D.C. Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said.

Actually, this isn’t related to some conspiracy theory.

See if this makes sense: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2670840/posts?page=265#265

'Yes the headlights are in the article'

Enough said. This is a discussion thread, if it's in the article, we discuss it. Period, end of story.

If you don't like it then don't participate.

On the other hand, many of us seem to think these new headlights are blinding to other drivers. If "we're being watched", perhaps "they" will learn something and ban them......for blinding other drivers.

Information is knowledge. Do you have a problem with that?

I have read no article that states she rammed the door. The air bag that deploys at 5mph did not deploy. The homicide team were called in right away. The story has changes 5 times ,gas, solvents, now radiator leak. How do you damage the radiator backing out? Does not pass the smell test.

I suspect that if she had a known health problem, nobody would have had to go through the contortions of inventing the highly-flammable radiator fluid theory.

Exactly correct. That would have been the FIRST thing released.

Now I would not be surprised if they said “she was a diabetic and didn’t know it”.

This is the first real news from this case since the fire itself. The thread should not be hijacked.

Beelzebubba and crosslink have a valid point. Maybe you should buzz off to the link beelzebubba provided.

What they have been trying to determine is the cause of death. They may know some underlying problem without making her medical history public.

If she had one of the two problems I mentioned, and they had been the sole cause of death, they wouldn’t be looking for another cause.

It would have been easier if they had pinned it on a health problem.

BTW, heart attacks take place more frequently around this time of day

Of course, if that had been the problem, the cause of death would have been rather evident.

In some of the early reports, I was sure there was a garage door mention. Perhaps not. I appreciate the response.
