Breaking: Gas Outages Reported Throughout ABQ (Up to 20,000 customers could be without gas)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 3, 2010 | ABQ Journal staff

9:40am UPDATE: New Mexico's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has activated the state's Emergency Operations Center to a Level 3 operations status because of the effects of the extreme cold in communities across New Mexico, Secretary-Designate Michael S. Duvall said in a news release.

Albuquerque Public Safety Director Darren White told KOAT-TV this morning that as many as 20,000 city residents could be without gas service today.

Increased demand has led to lower gas pressure around the city and the potential for loss of service, and the city was contacted early this morning and told of the potential outage, Action 7 News said.

Natural gas services also have been disrupted in Bernalillo and Placitas, affecting an estimated 9,000 customers, according to the New Mexico Gas Company website.

An additional 10,800 customers have been affected in the Taos, Questa and Red River areas, and roughly 2,600 customers in Espanola are being affected by service disruptions, according to the gas company's emergency updates.

"The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office is asking all residents of the unincorporated county to lower their thermostats by 10 degrees to reduce the pressure on current natural gas supplies."

Ummnnnn, wouldn't reducing thermostats by 10 degrees tend to raise pressure? And isn't low pressure the problem?

10:30am UPDATE: The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is asking all residents of the unincorporated county to lower their thermostats by 10 degrees to reduce the pressure on current natural gas supplies.

A similar announcement from the city of Albuquerque is expected shortly.

Plus, if you use that headlamp you’ll quickly build a manly muscle-face to go with it!

You are exactly correct, of course. The Sheriff's Office should have used some other word besides "pressure" in their statement. Maybe "stress" or "demand".

Was this text:

Cause: Rolling black-outs in West Texas have impeded the delivery of natural gas coming into New Mexico. Our pipeline system is intact and our crews are working to minimize the impact of this temporary situation.

in the article? Or from somewhere else? Because if it was in the article, it is not there at the moment.

A friend on another forum just made a post early this AM about an EPA reg that is causing natural gas pipeline companies to switch from gas turbine compressors to electric motors. He predicted that we would see natural gas delivery issues due to this idiotic regulatory decision from EPA.

Get yourself a couple of those Mr. Heater heaters. Catalytic heat with a low oxygen shutoff. Also get an adapter so you can use the larger tanks as they are made for propane canisters. Heating with a cooking stove puts carbon monoxide into the air.

I bought one of those heaters and adapters along with a propane/CO detector for the kids/grand kids.

They have outlawed wood fires in ALB.

Let them try to enforce it.

Taos, Questa and Red River, much of Espanola have no natural gas which is really convenient since it dropped to -28 overnight. Now Kit Carson electric is warning us that we may lose electricity as well. Space heaters have sold out in Taos county and people are driving to Santa Fe/Albuquerque to try and find them. Luckily I picked up 10 gals of Kerosene on Monday so I can heat the house and office overnight and hopefully avoid frozen pipes.
