From FOX:
DEVELOPING: Loud explosions and gunfire were heard in the Egyptian capital of Cairo Friday, as protesters demanding the removal of President Hosni Mubarak defied a curfew, Al Jazeera reported. Egyptian television reports the ruling party headquarters in Cairo are on fire.
From TWITTER:
WashingtonPost: Clinton: We urge #Egypt authorities to allow peaceful protest, reverse unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications less than 20 seconds ago
Protesters aren’t limiting violence to uniformed police anymore. Anyone known to be, or “known to be” a cop is in danger.
Slight aside: I remember the Egypt police riots of the 80s. My older brother crossed Cairo to come get me from my school and we rode back to the embassy housing compound in an ambulance. Can’t help but think of that as this all unfolds.
Myself I would hope Egyptians try to model our Tea Party, and that they choose someone like a Sarah Palin thats acceptable to them.
I wouldn’t count on it. We can hope, but the chances seem slim. This is a perfect moment for the MB. We all know it. I’m not an optimist, so I expect the worst.
Yemen, the Sudan, Albania, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan.... where else? Dominoes. Nothing happens in isolation. Even the push for gun control in the US and the attempts to control the internet can be part of this whole mess.
Twitter:
BBC World tweets that there has been an explosion at state security building in Rafah, Egypt, with casualties http://bit.ly/e5laM7
Have you seen the “censored” tweets about Egypt?
No- I haven’t. Just waking up- having my first cuppa and pondering the new world we’re entering.
Also- while reading more about the US backing the plan to overthrow Mubarak I just discovered it’s a wikileak- so it’s legit.
Sarcasm? Or serious that wikileak = legit? I’ve been up all night, so can’t tell.
100+ deaths so far.
Al Jazeera pushing the claim that the MB had nothing to do with this. Maybe they didn’t start it, but we can count on them co-opting it.
LOL- well I’m still waiting for the caffiene to kick in so maybe legit was the wrong word!
The cables leaked by wikileak show our support for getting rid of Mubarak.
I can’t comprehend WHY getting rid of Mubarak would benefit the US. Unless it’s the whole “Obama-Muslim” theory. Other than that, it doesn’t make any sense to me.
Oddly enough- this goes back to Bush...these cables start in December 2008, so the whole Obama/muslim theory doesn’t stand up.
It’s clear there has been a pro-democray momvement in Egypt for some time- independent of islamic extremists. But the question we won’t know the answer to for awhile is- will the islamists co-opt the movement completely and install sharia etc...or will they be a tolerated but not ruling voice...
I saw that it was “three years,” dating it to Bush. Doesn’t make sense to me. Something is missing.
Count on an attempt to co-opt. Too much unrest in too many countries. I’ve never worn a tin foil hat, but I may need one after this.
The Saudi king has come out in support of Mubarak. How long until Saudi Arabia gets its own rash of rioting?
A few months ago I had a spat with someone here on FR over the internet kill switch. They believed it couldn't be done. I couldn't believe how naive they were. I think it can be done here and is already in place to be activated. Technology like that wouldn't go unused. The "net neutrality" was only meant to notify us it exists and is ready to go.
Looks like the world is going to unravel this weekend. If this were one country and only a snapshot in time I wouldn't care, but it is not. While some sit here and hope for good to come of this in Egypt, it is unraveling before our very eyes.
Before the year's end, we will see similar situations in Europe. The muslim base is well established there. Any retaliation to stop refugees or immigrants from the ME to Europe will spark unrest.
Fifty years ago we would have been isolated from this unrest. Oceans and peoples apart.
The Carter years gave us a taste and warning of things to come. We did not listen and many today, do not even remotely recall the events at that time. We have had decades to "secure" of ourselves and President after President, Congress after Congress...fiddled away that security.
We needed to be able to rise up to the ME and walk away completely. Instead there is a ribbon of black that flows between us covering us in its stench.
Oil for blood, it might be the only time I ever agree with the wacko liberal left. They pointed out a significant problem, but then their progressive cronies stand in the way of our solving that problem. They stood in the way for decades and now we have a President than has essentially signed our deaths and those of our sons and daughters with his Executive Order(s) to ban the recovery of our own resources.
We The People should be ashamed of our own stupidity.
Carter crumbled in the 1970s. 0bama is much weaker or potentially much more dangerous for I believe what is hidden about 0bama is about to be revealed. And as odd as that sounds, it sounds eerily similar to recent claims from Achmadinajad.
I can't believe, no...I can believe..., the Time is upon us.
Morning musings are done.
This just got too real for me. Everything we’re seeing is bad, badbadbad. All these countries in turmoil at the same time. Plus all the OTHER concerns we could start linking in.
But my stomach is sick now, seeing reports that Maadi is caught in the flames. That’s the neighborhood where my family lived when I was a kid.
What started with one intention under Bush may have continued with another purpose under Obama.
Go rest FRiend.
Shut down the Suez Canal and see how soon unrest occurs here at home.
People are growing tired of the leftist environmental crap.
We can upgrade and improve refining facilities ralatively quickly when forced to. We can also increase Canadian crude which is our largest supplier.
We must wean ourselves from middle eastern oil, forment revolution in the middle east, keep it burning and we can turn inward.
