State of the Union Address: President Promotes More Government to 'Win the Future'
Catholic Online ^ | 1/26/11 | Keith A Fournier

Posted on 01/26/2011 5:51:32 AM PST by tcg

After claiming that the Nation was "poised for progress", the stock market was "roaring back" and the "back of the recession had been broken" he called the Nation to "win the future" through innovation, education and the rebuilding of our infrastructure. In the first half of the speech he also outlined a governing approach to accomplishing these policy goals which positioned federal funding and federal assistance as making it possible for us to "reinvent ourselves."

The President told both chambers of Congress that we could be in our "Sputnik moment" explaining, "Our free enterprise system is what drives innovation. But because it's not always profitable for companies to invest in basic research, throughout history our government has provided cutting-edge scientists and inventors with the support that they need. That's what planted the seeds for the Internet. That's what helped make possible things like computer chips and GPS.

"Just think of all the good jobs - from manufacturing to retail - that have come from those breakthroughs..."

...The Republican response was given by Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee Chairman. While showing respect to the President, he laid out a very different governing vision stating, "We believe government's role is both vital and limited - to defend the nation from attack and provide for the common defense . to secure our borders. to protect innocent life. to uphold our laws and Constitutional rights . to ensure domestic tranquility and equal opportunity . and to help provide a safety net for those who cannot provide for themselves.

President Barack Obama delivered his second State of the Union Address on Tuesday evening, January 25, 2011. He called Americans to "Win the future" with the assistance of Government. Throughout the speech he called for the Nation to out innovate, out educate and out build the rest of the world. However, from the first half of the speech it appears that these big things will require Big Government.

The Republican response from Paul Ryan laid out a very different governing vision...

The hell it isn't.

But its not usually profitable for them to compete with the Government, which doesn't have to show a profit.

He also mentioned that he wanted us not to be dependent on oil. He left out the word “foreign”.

He said that he wanted 1 million electric cars on the road by 2014. He didn’t say what would happen when that load was thrown on an already deteriorating electric production system. Does he think that a solar cell and wind mill will produce that kind of electricity? Right now, during the summer in most areas of the South, people come home after work and turn up the AC. There are regional power losses and brown outs. Can you imagine what will happen with a million electric cars getting plugged in at the same time?

As I listened to this fool speak, I thought to myself, he didn’t hear a word we said last November. I was not at all inspired towards bipartisan cooperation, quite the opposite in fact. He was so wrong that I wouldn’t even know where to start describing what was wrong with it all. It was all wrong. His call for an amnesty bill was probably the worst of it. Someone get this idiot off the stage.

Almost every innovation government has come up with is through defense spending. So Obama is advocating more defense spending or is he just advocating another stimulus to GE and his other buddies in industry.

Boehner’s expressions (or lack thereof) thru the whole speech last night were like “when is this going to be over?”. Absolutely hilarious.

Obama is also planning a seperate speech to push for a hi cap magazine and assault weapons ban.

We don’t need a sputnick moment, mr president. We don’t need to devolve into the pre-collapse soviet union of the 1960s. We need for you and your gang of thugs to get your f¥ckin boots off our necks.

And the NYT is right behind him, wiping up his rear.

They have an article explaining that the current economic situation is mainly the result of inadequate government regulation and “corporate mismanagement.”

The Left cannot change their spots. They can only wear the skin of another animal. No economic problem is the fault of Socialist/Communist/Fascist economic policy. It is always the fault of “too free markets,” “corporate greed,” “individual greed,” and, of course, “Capitalism.”

Winning the Future = WTF

There’s a more apt expression for Obama’s “WTF.”

Reagan had it right. Government is in the way.

Our infrastructure receives a “D” grade compared globally. It is in horrible shape.

But fixing the infrastructure does NOT spur economic growth/recovery. It is a net parasitic drain on the economy, even if it employs people for a while.

Fixing infrastructure is like replacing the brake shoes on your car. It needs to be done. It makes your travel better and safer. But it does not increase the value of your car and it is a net drain on your finances.

We do need to fix our infrastructure. But let’s not let them pass the lie that it is good for the economy.

Quite the contrary. Because so much of our earnings are diverted to things like tolls (toll operators are in the Teamsters Union and every time you pay a toll, the majority of what you pay is to pay that jackass to sit in the booth and grip that you are not handing him the money kindly enough and to fatten their pensions) and highway taxes, that money gets diverted to unions and to buy votes. It is precisely because of liberal politics using funds like that to buy votes and those funds NOT going to fix the infrastructure that has led us to the point that our infrastructure is in such a dilapidated state that we no longer need to simply replace the brake shoes, we need a frame-off restoration.

And these liberal aholes want to pretend that spending more on infrastructure will boost the economy. As if those funds aren’t needed desperately elsewhere.
