Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.
Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.
"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

One detail that has not been let out is what he was wearing at the Pharmacy and whether he was carrying a briefcase.
If John was in trouble, why didn't he just go back home??
AND WHY DIDN'T HE CALL HIS WIFE???? SHE WAS TRAVELING IS NOT AN EXCUSE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.
Every person spells "I don't want to get involved".
Wonder how many lies all of these witnesses have told...in the form of opinions...

With his cell phone found at the construction site, I’m betting he was “Mugged” closer to home...Got hit on the head, which would explain the strange behavior the pharmacist noted.
If his briefcase was taken he may also be without keys, cards, medication and ID. Mom always called dad’s briefcase his purse. Only kept paper money in pocket.
Trip to pharmacy may have been to get needed meds/medical attention. Remember he wasn’t thinking clearly even then. He called a cab to get to Philly. So what/who was in Philly?
Well, that can’t be it. The roof profile is wrong, and the background is wrong, even if there are some trees there.
Remember, his neigbor Robert Dill originally drove John to the train station on Christmas Eve which eventually got him to NYC. From NYC, he went to Mitre. From Mitre to Wilmington. From Wilmington to home.
Another neighbor said he heard loud TV coming from the house on the 4 days surrounding Christmas which was unusual but no one appeared to be home. It couldn't have been that loud or they would have knocked on the door.
I'd say John made it home and turned off his auto timer.
The fire folks were called for the smoke bombs about 11 PM on the 28th. Someone reported that they were going to talk to John about it which means he wasn't around.
EVERYONE IN TOWN KNEW ABOUT HIS LAWSUIT.
My best guess is that he stayed in Wilmington overnight and got home on the 29th.
There's a lot that doesn't make sense here...On the 28th at 11 PM the fire folks came...If his TV was blaring like the neighbor says, why didn't they knock on his dood or even knock the door down.
I have a feeling that this is a "dirty" town.
I think that's an old cell phone...or one of many. No one has EVER said it was actually used by him recently.
He was robbed/mugged within the 40 minutes between the phamracy and when he is seen on the video.

Police have been checking him out, but as of earlier today have not arrested him nor charged him with anything. It is plausible that a cabbie would frequent the same few high-fare, big-tip downtown areas day in and day out, year in and year out, scanning for likely fares in the same few places -- the big hotels, the train station. I don't find it unusual that he recognized the same guy twice.

I wondered why he went to those lawyers office, I had not heard that part before. That’s not to say it hasn’t been reported, but I haven’t had the time to be thorough.
Perhaps it was just that he knew someone there. But, no report as to who or what he asked for??
It almost seems as though something happened at his home resulting in his walking and/or searching for a cab or a ride.
I imagine their property value would go down a lot with the view obstructed by that behemoth house.

From NY, he emailed a couple of folks..on the 26th and 27th..."Stuck in NY"...."Still stuck in NY"
He went to his Mitre meeting in DC on the 28th and was seen getting off the Amtrak in Wilmington on the 28th.....but we don't know what time.
The next event is a call to a cab company on the 29th at 4 or 5 PM...at a Plaza about 10 minutes from home.
The next time WE see him is at the Pharmacy in the same Plaza at 6:00 PM on the 29th. He was looking for a ride to Wilmington. (John is a regular hitch hiker.) My son lived in NYC...that's all he did, too...Train, bus...cab...
What is the strangest thing about this case is why he didn't call his wife...
I'm wondering if she dumped him...Remember, she's the elite one in the family.
The reason I even think that is because the doorman said he hadn't seen her in a couple of weeks and there was a package for her at the desk. Big hmmmmmmm
I think John lost his case because of dirty politics. We just had something similar here. Damn judge...
Scott has been a cabbie for 30 years....
I have posted the number in my phone by calling it so I can use it later. It is possible that he did do that.
I can also believe that his killer did it.
More investigation and interviews are needed. The truth is out there.
something happened at his home...Phone was found across the street a house under constuction...Good reason he didn’t call his wife. Evidence (Boot prints and loud sounds coming from house) indicates that someone was in the house possibly when he got home on the 28th.
He could have gotten a skull fracture/knocked unconscious at that time which would explain his actions and the blood shot eyes later. Trying to get away from house without briefcase, cell phone, credit cards etc. would be logical. ALso account for time lapse during the morning of 29th and why the police couldn’t find him on the 28th.
Speculated a couple of days ago that he was dumped in the constuction house (lost his cell phone then) and the bombs,thinking he was dead, were an attempt to dispose of the body...But bug bombs would only poison him not start a fire.....Did they follow him and complete the job? What ws in the brief case?
I wonder, could bug bomb poisoning at least partially account for the bloodshot eyes and his odd behavior in the parking garage on the 29th?
I'll bet it's an old phone....Maybe John gave it to one of the workman....maybe one who was a vet. John simply was not a nasty guy. I think he was more hurt by the building. It was like a family heirloom and he had inherited it from his brother. Probably lots of memories of them sitting on the porch, viewing sunrises on the Deleware.
I think the bootprints in the house have been determined to be insignificant and that the house was not the crime scene.
The louds sounds...Sounds like a timer thing while he was away. It couldn't have been that loud or they would have knocked on the door to see if something was wrong.
All I see throughout this is and via these witnesses is: "I don;t want to get involved"....and "Cover thy a**".
