Wilmington, Delaware (CNN) -- Police have found homicide victim John Wheeler's cell phone, according to a taxi driver who was interviewed by investigators this week.

Athel Scott told CNN National Correspondent Susan Candiotti that police told him they found the cab driver's number in the phone of Wheeler, the former Pentagon official who was found dead in a Delaware landfill. He said investigators wanted to know how his number got there. Scott... says he told the police he didn't have any idea.

"I never got a call from the man. I don't know him... He's never been in my cab. I don't know how my number got in his cellphone," Scott says he told police...

John Wheeler to be buried in Arlington
Updated at 09:51 AM today

WILMINGTON, Del. - February 17, 2011 (WPVI) — A slain ex-Pentagon official, whose body was found in a Delaware landfill, will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the funeral for 66-year-old John Wheeler III will include a procession in a horse-drawn carriage and his cremated remains will be laid to rest in a columbarium at the Virginia cemetery.

The newspaper says a spokeswoman at the cemetery confirmed the funeral would begin at 9 a.m. on April 29.

A neighbor told The News Journal that Wheeler’s family held a private service for him back in January.

Wheeler was a driving force behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and had worked in three presidential administrations.

His body was found among trash being dumped at a Wilmington landfill on Dec. 31. A medical examiner determined Wheeler died of blunt trauma injuries after being assaulted.

Newark police also said they still have no suspects in Wheeler’s slaying.

May his murderer(s) be brought to justice before then.

I’m sorry, I know this is OT, but it seems wrong not to give it a mention:

Dallas Green grieves over granddaughter

“....”God bless the lady that took her. She took three bullets and tried to protect Christina. Couldn’t do it. But she was just a wonderful person for the family and for Christina. I’ll never forget her. I know she’s going through her own hell, but she shouldn’t. Christina did want to go and did want to be a part of that. They were buddies as much as a buddy could be together with the difference in ages. We send her our best obviously, always.”...”

Need to go find the Kleenex.

somebody sure wants this covered up, chasing smokebombs instead of suspects - the following three words come quickly to mind in response:

Bite me, Biden.

Wow...a lot to take in.
The credit card charges for the plane tickets to Madrid are intriguing. I wonder what the actual purchase date was? Madrid is not the normal destination of your average street thug.

She makes a point when she theorizes someone has already been paid off.

I keep going back to a comment (since removed) in the WaPo. I said in the beginning it was the first red herring. We have seen issue after issue thrown against the wall by the local authorities since. I have no doubt the locals want this to go away. Of course they sealed all of the warrants. The less those on the outside know, the fewer specific questions they can ask.

“as Klyce suspects, a targeted operation. As the investigation has dragged on, Klyce has become increasingly frustrated with law enforcement. “If you write anything, I hope you write that the cops just made our lives miserable,” she said.”

The cops confiscated credit cards, financial records, and Wheeler’s computer. In recent weeks, some of her cards have had mysterious charges, including two plane tickets from New York to Madrid totaling $3,000, according to Klyce.

The silence strengthens a hunch Klyce has had since the beginning: That Wheeler’s death wasn’t random. “I think perhaps no one has been on the reward because they’ve already been paid,” she said. Then there’s the way Wheeler’s body was apparently moved from Wilmington to the dumpster in Newark. “The way they disposed of his body, it’s a miracle anybody ever found it. That just sounds like a pro to me.” Klyce isn’t the only one to raise the possibility.

Klyce saw the videos, and said Wheeler appeared normal—for Wheeler, at least. Wheeler’s doctor, who has known him 40 years, agreed, according to Klyce. Wheeler had a terrible sense of direction. “He was disoriented every day in his life,” she said. “He couldn’t walk from here to CVS without specifically drawn maps.” “He was probably most definitely lost,” she added.

>>the funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, scheduled for April 29

A lot of incite into Jack’s personality plus much more - very interesting article. I would really like to know who the future senator was that called and told Jack’s five year old son he would kill Jack re: building the Vietnam Memorial.

Thanks very much for finding that and posting it.

Bottom line, whoever killed him took a plane to Madrid. I hope the FBI is following that trail.

Thank you so much for posting. Still don't think it was a hit.

Why was Jack going to Philly if they had a wedding in Cambridge? Why didn't he go back to NYC after the meeting to be with his wife for a couple of days before the wedding.

Something is wrong.

There last encounter was a fight...and it must have been bigger than she is letting on. He could have gone right back to NYC after his meeting on the 28th...

Maybe that's the clues...Jack emailed someone on the 26th and 27th..."stuck in NY". But his meeting isn't until the 28th.

The only kind of hit I ever considered was one put out by the wife.

The madrid charges??

This article looks like a "defense" argument.

Mysterious charges...but only Madrid tickets mentioned???

I don't know what to say except it sure seems that Jack didn't want to be with his wife after he left NYC....

The other thing that bothered me was that he was cremated...at her wishes or his??

Why did she write that about his sense of direction? It was unnecessary and derogatory. He was fine in the video according to her??

THis is what stood out to me too. Certainly shouldn't take weeks to figure out who traveled on those tickers. The cops confiscated credit cards, financial records, and Wheeler's computer. In recent weeks, some of her cards have had mysterious charges, including two plane tickets from New York to Madrid totaling $3,000, according to Klyce.

Good find blueplum...and there IS alot of different info and perspective in the Slate story. One item I found stunningly fascinating (and no follow up) that during the building of the Viet Nam Memorial, someone WHO WOULD LATER BECOME A SENATOR, left a threatening phone message with Wheeler’s five year old son.

?

I know, nothing to do with the actual case, but wow.

Like Turton...this some is supposed to ‘go away.’

The Modesto Bee - Sep 19, 1988

Photobucket

The article in slate states Klyce is his 2nd wife ('...Wheeler and Klyce, his second wife,) . I need to see if the above wedding took place. If it did was it one of those marriages that was over before the honeymoon?

It is the little things such as that which bother me. It probably means nothing more than sloppy fact checking, but one must be sure.

Good catch on the marriages. Thought I'd read there were three. Am still thinking about the flight to Spain.
Spain:
.confirmation of ticket use (possible video)
.Spanish speaking
.Often used by people traveling to other southern European country. Ex: France, Italy, Cicily
.Would need a passport to leave country.
.Someone wanting it to appear that Jack had taken off. Thinking his body would not be found.
.Has Interpol been called in?
