Every time I hear about a shaker in the midwest, I picture thousands of old ladies picking up the knick knacks that adorn their chair rails, etc.

Hah! This old lady would not be picking up knick-knacks. She would be mopping the floor.

I'm in a suburb about thirty miles due west of downtown Chicago. I was freeping when the computer started shaking, then my heavy computer chair began heavy trembling. Lasted 10-20 seconds. Gave me some dizziness and minor nausea for a few minutes after. It was scary, considering I'm on the top (fourth) floor of my condo building.

Sure, you can joke if you want, but this is serious.
What more proof of global warming do you need?

Found this:
THE NEW MADRID FAULT SYSTEM EXTENDS 120 MILES SOUTHWARD from the area of Charleston, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following Interstate 55 to Blytheville and on down to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It crosses five state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in three places and the Ohio River in two places.

And I picture the New Madrid Fault plunging the Tennessee Valley into utter chaos and destruction.
A major quake on the New Madrid fault will make a Cali quake look like a picnic.

From your link:
THE FAULT IS ACTIVE, AVERAGING MORE THAN 200 MEASURED EVENTS per YEAR (1.0 or more on the Richter scale), about 20 per month. Tremors large enough to be felt (2.5 - 3.0 on the Richter scale) are noted annually. Every 18 months the fault releases a shock of 4.0 or more, capable of local minor damage. The most recent registering 4.3 along the New Madrid Fault on Thanksgiving evening, 1996, which was felt by citizens in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky, Illinois and Mississippi. Magnitudes of 5.0 or greater occurring about once per decade, can do significant damage, and be felt in several states.

I’m in Fort Wayne.
I felt a little rumbling and actually went down in the basement to see if the newly installed fireplace insert that I’d gotten wasn’t causing cracks in the chimney foundation. An earthquake makes me feel better.
