Dem budget: $1.1 trillion; 1,900 pages By: David Rogers December 14, 2010 04:03 PM EST
Senate Democrats began rolling out Tuesday a year-end, government-wide spending bill that cuts more than $26 billion from President Barack Obamas 2011 requests even as it defies earmark bans or veto threats over Joint Strike Fighter engines.
Filling more than 1,900 pages and costing $1.1 trillion, the measure is sure to invite criticism as a last stand by the Senates old bulls before the more conservative, tea party-oriented Congress takes hold in January. But weeks of bipartisan work have gone into the effort to meet spending targets previously embraced by the Republican leadership and also try to salvage something from the failed budget process this year.
The Departments of Defense, State and Homeland Security have the greatest stake in the increased appropriations that are permitted above 2010 levels, but to a surprising degree, the bill also makes room for new education and health spending in addition to billions to meet a shortfall in Pell Grants for low-income college students.
The first testgetting to 60 votes to limit debatecould come as early as Saturday. The $857 billion price tag for President Barack Obamas tax cut deal with Republicans makes this task harder. And if the Senate falls short of 60, it will have to either embrace some version of a stripped-down House-passed continuing resolution for 2011 or simply punt the fight into January when Republicans will have more power.

These people just plain don’t care what they American people think. They should be run out of DC on a rail! There should be NO extra spending. Period! 1.1 Trillion Dollars right before they go on vacation...and a lame duck session too! The dems and the Repubs who have their goodies in this should be finished when their terms are up. Not sure much will change in January but THIS SPENDING WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT HAS GOT TO STOP. EVEN IF WE SAVE ONE THIN DIME, IT’S BETTER THAN NOTHING! I get so sick of people saying well it’s only a billion dollars here and there. I don’t care. It’s TOO MUCH!!
Were legislators asleep Nov 2???
FUBO!
FUDEMS!
Traitors All
To unveil this a day after Moody’s warns that we could soon lose our Aaa credit rating for out-of-control deficits...simply unbelievable.
I wonder what this means? Dems lie. Politico lies. Did the Republicans even get a chance to see this bill before it was brought forward? Does it have a whole bunch of Republican pork in it? Curious minds want to know.
In any case, this cannot be allowed to pass. And they've got to pull that damned food control bill out of it, too.
The pubbies got snookered again, the fix is already in place, all the crap we thought we could prevent will now become law. I suspect this secret spending bill will have the necessary payoffs to secure the 60 votes.
Punt!
Well, on the bright side, it’s less pages than Obamacare.
“But weeks of bipartisan work have gone into the effort”
Well, it may be true that Democrats and Politico lie... BTW, Democrats and Politico are one and the same. However, in this case, I’m sure it’s 100% true this is a bi-partisan effort. Half of the Senate GOP caucus are RINOs. Some of them are barely Republicans at all.
I thought all spending bills were to originate in the House. What the h*** is going on?
The time for the final solution is here.
It must be ended now
>> DeMint and Coburn are going to force a reading of this monstrocity on the floor before the vote.
Do you have a link for that?
The Dem's run both houses of congress in complete chaos and sneak through their marxist agenda when they think America is not looking.
It really needs to be pointed out that every time the Dem's run anything, it melts down into crisis; they simply have no executive or real world experience.
Not to worry Charlie Crist is coming with his politicians without libido...I mean Labels Gang. Does anybody think this mess is fixable???
If this gets passed it is end game.
No link. It was discussed today between Megyn Kelly and Brett Bayer on Americas Newsroom today on FOX News. They both seemed equally shock that congress was going to jam a 1900 page budget through short notice. They discussed what could be done and Brett brought up the GOP concern with this and DeMints and Coburns plan. It sticks in my mind because I distrust Coburn and my ears perked up when I heard he was getting on board with this.
It was during my lunch so I am thinking it was around 2 pm eastern. Maybe 2:15.
