Jobs threatened as end nears for stimulus
Houston Chronicle ^ | December 13, 2010 | Stewart M. Powell

..."That's the nature of a short-term stimulus," says Thomas Mann, a scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., and former executive director of the American Political Science Association. "Many jobs initially created or temporarily sustained with federal support will disappear if the private economy does not revive and state government (tax) receipts do not increase."

Situation 'dire'

The end of $787 billion in national emergency spending is pushing Houston-area recipients to hasten the search for new ways to pay for the jobs - or face politically embarrassing layoffs.

The "few jobs (the stimulus) did create have been temporary and unsustainable," insists Republican U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul of Austin. "By bailing out state and local governments and increasing federal debt, the stimulus artificially delayed the need for some state governments to rein in their excessive spending."

Elected officials from Texas and elsewhere are under widening economic and political pressure to impose draconian spending cuts in the wake of the Moment of Truth report by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform that called for a $2 trillion cut in discretionary federal spending by 2020.

"The financial situation at the state and federal level is dire," warns Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. "This is going to be a period of austerity measures."

In a sign of what lies ahead, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has ordered steep cuts in state spending to close an expected $20 billion gap between spending and revenue over the next two years...

Maryland-Montgomery County braces for eyesores, safety hazards with new budget cuts

[Excerpt] Filthy bathrooms. Tall grass. Legions of potholes.

Some analysts say those images of disrepair will become commonplace throughout Montgomery County, with widespread cuts proposed by County Executive Ike Leggett.

"[County] Council staff is concerned about the cleanliness and condition of county facilities, such as recreation centers, community centers, libraries and health care and day care facilities," a staff memo says. "There are public health concerns and also concerns about loss of revenue that will occur if people stop participating in fee-supported activities or leasing space because of the condition of the facilities."

Leggett recommended $1.5 million worth of reductions in cleaning and grounds maintenance as part of $36 million in midyear cuts to help close a $100 million gap this fiscal year.

Under Leggett's plan, bathrooms in public facilities would be cleaned twice a week instead of daily, half a million dollars of building maintenance would be eliminated and $200,000 worth of building repairs would be deferred. Mowing, leaf and tree removal would be less frequent. [End Excerpt]

D.C. intentionally creates a State level jobs/spending bubble (not to mention the “Green” jobs bubble, and Union jobs bubble, it’s created) and is then shocked, shocked, when it inevitably bursts.

Legions of potholes...

Not sure I understand that one. Seems we could get rid of 80% of the DTOT workers since there’s usually 4 guys standing around 1 guy doing the work every time you see them on the roads.

I am amazed this Liberal actually understands (at least a little) about the nature of Federal Aid (stimulus).

Local governments become dependent on the federal tit. They build long term budgets on short term federal aid.

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal understood this when he refused the temporary unemployment aid from Obama that carried the string of making the longer term permanent law.

Federal aid creates chaos in state and local governments.

On March 5, 2010, Senator Harry Reid said, 'Today is a big day in America.
Only 36,000 people lost their jobs today, which is really good.'

Where are the jobs Harry?

stimulus in MA was used to subsidize housing

e.g. Boston Herald, NOV 22, a woman with two children who made $35,000 a year was given $1,000 per month toward her $1,200 a month apartment in Cambridge, MA.

This line of thinking is screwed up on so many levels I don’t know where to begin.

Talk about short term memory problems!!!

Doesn't any one remember the impact of President Clinton's actions 1993 - 1996? How many “100,000” jobs were added to the nation through direct Federal grants/funding? All of those jobs were initially funded via our Federal tax dollars and that funding stream dried up after a few years - aka they lost their political impact.

Starting in 1995 and running through the end of the Clinton Presidency all of the jobs he added were either lost (no state/local tax support) or were added to state and local tax burdens (no more Federal tax funding).

The dimocrats, noting the direct lack of voter outrage replayed the Clinton playbook under Obama, only larger. Think it is bad now, wait until the dimocrats replay the Clinton/Obama playbook in the future!

Clintoon did the same thing. Remember his “100,000 cops on the street” ploy? It funded 100,000 cops for exactly one year. After that, it was up to the communities to pay for them. Typical Demo ploy to grab headlines and say they are working to fix things.

No kidding. It's amazing how the whole reason for 'employment' is lost on most people, especially politicians. People hire others in order to profit from their labor, not 'provide' them with a job.

Stop the outsourcing and foreign aid. That would be the first step.

Yes, but that bought Clinton time. Time for the tech boom and Y2K to kick in and generate millions of (temporary) jobs. Jobs that the MSM gave Clinton credit for, even though the tech boom and Y2K would have happened regardless.

A decade later, many still fondly remember "Clinton's economy", which you can bet the Democrats will make the issue in 2012. We'd better be ready with answers, because right or wrong, their votes will still count against us if the Democrats succeed in this.
