WASHINGTON—The U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in November and the unemployment rate rose to its highest level since April, underlining the continued weakness in the labor market 17 months into the recovery.

Nonfarm payrolls rose by 39,000 last month as private-sector employers added only 50,000 jobs, the Labor Department said Friday. The October number was revised up slightly to show a 172,000 increase from a previous estimate of 151,000.

The unemployment rate, which is obtained from a separate household survey, unexpectedly rose to 9.8% last month. More than 15 million people who would like to work can't get a job.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast payrolls would rise by 144,000 and that the jobless rate would remain unchanged at 9.6%.

Some commentator on FoxNews said that the rise in the UE percent was due to people thinking the job market was improving, so they were re-signing up at their local Jobs/UE offices.

So basically the propaganda backfired.

I’ve suspected for a long time that the jobless rate is actually worse but they don’t want to say it is over 10% for political purposes.

They (regardless of administration party affiliation) always use the U3 numbers. They do not like to use the U6 numbers which includes those who quit looking for work, those who dropped off the Labor Dept Jobs/UE office rolls because they exceeded their UE benefits, and those underemployed (engineers working at McDonalds, for example).

The last U6 figure I saw was 17.5%

Also the GDP numbers are susposed to be corrected for inflation but I seriouly doubt that since gov seems to think there is no inflation.

They pick-and-choose what elements to include in the inflation numbers. Because it makes the number too high, they usually do not include food or fuel. Therefore, it is easier to make the number appear to be manageable.

just because obamanation has called what we are going through, a RECOVERY, doesn't mean it is one. obamanation would not choose to speak the truth if it was to his advantage... he cannot distinguish between real, absolute, unchangeable TRUTH and his own thoughts... that is what makes him mentally ill.

“If 50% of America was unemployed I believe the lamestream media would stick to the 9.8 percent rate. Just like the 12 million illegal immigrants number never rises. Or the government reported increase of only 1% inflation, a lie that conservative economists report to be over 10%. This obamantion administration is using the tactics all communist nations do by controlling the numbers reported using the communist controlled media, mostly stupid overpaid liberals who are not worth watching or hearing from at all as they are boring and lying regularly.
The little school book animal farm about communism exposes the tactics communist powers use and misinformation is at the top of the list. “

Time for the lying burorats to put a little time in the unemployment line....

Also, isn't government spending included in GDP? So if the gov't spends and extra couple-a tril, they could, in affect, create a recovery out of thin air right?

I don’t remember any other time in my life, where unemployment figures remained static for six months in a row. This whole thing stinks of CYA disinformation.

Is the fact that the Republicans are going to be in charge of the House causing a more frank addressing of the unemployment figures? I don’t see why it would, but something curious is going on here above and beyond accurate reporting IMO.

If they would use honest figures it would equal the unemployment rate during most of the “great depression”. What we have is a monumental collapse and barring some miraculous recovery which would be totally “unexpected” this will make the thirties look like a picnic before it is over and most of it is deliberately created.

I’d like to see about a thousand clowns all decked out show up in front of the White House. They could hoot and holler the solidarity line since Barack is obviously one of them. ;^)

They could wear small placards around their neck heralding his ability to juggle the figures, make budget cuts look like support for the military, and then in unison bow towards the White House in the same show of respect, he extends to world leaders, while saying “we’re not worthy...”

What a hoot...

They could also chant, “We divorce thee, we divorce thee, we divorce thee...”, since that’s seems to be the language of those he respects the most.

These monthly reports are becoming as predictable as the old Soviet crop production reports. With this crew, it’s all about blaming Bush instead of bad weather.

If I took a drink every time they reported something “unexpected” I wouldn’t live a week.

Pound this out on facebook, like an angry god lol.

Obama’s failure to focus on Jobs, still killing us. What in the hell is he doing in Afghanistan today with the Tax debate ongoing?

I guess, he didn’t want to visit the troops during Christmas and miss his Hawaii vacation.

Economy Added Fewer Jobs Than Expected in November

Translated headline if a Republican was president:

Unemployment Highest In More Than Six Months

There's a poster on Market Watch called “TKWallace” who does an excellent breakdown of the numbers every week. He gets the data from the BLS reports. It's worth checking out what he has posted today (and in the past), because he confirms that the actual numbers are WAY worse than this.

Way worse is a course heading locked on by the evil zombies in the wheelhouse!

Aim for the rudder, any other heading would be in the right direction!

I suggest sticking with the U-6 number.

Do you mean the U-3 number? The U-6 number is over 22% today (and approaches 23% with the latest data).

Yes - there are millions of "slackers" out there.

But - we can't play apples and oranges vis this Depression and the Great Depression if we want an honest comparison of unemployment.

It's like this: your average goof out there see's unemployment below 10% (well, just barely now....and these numbers are even juiced by the Labor Feds). Then, your average good watches Katie Couric report the numbers, but then reminds everyone that during the Great Depression, the numbers were 25% unemployed (some even say it was 28% in 1937 during the further Depression downturn that resulted from FDRs disastrous socialism policies). So, average goof listens to Katie, and says "Hmmm....well, we're not even half as bad off as the country was in the 1930's. Right?"

Wrong. We might even be worse off:

- Our debt is much, much worse

- Our manufacturing and industrial base is but a fraction of what it was in the 1930's

- Our entitlement class is growing by the day, yet their percentage of the tax burden has shrunk significantly in 15 years, leaving them prone to demand even further "benefits" at no cost to their class group

- Regulation is 100 times worse than it was in the 1930's, and this is a huge turn off to starting new business to get the nation out of this terrible situation

I see your point, however, we have to acknowledge (in some fashion) that we "AIN'T at" 9.8% real unemployment. It is much, much worse.

This is very significant. The "official" unemployment uses U3 data, which is totally wrong. If they used the same criteria they used during the Great Depression (when unemployment was 25%), and compared the same numbers today, the public would be told the truth - we are in a Depression.

Indeed.

The only difference is that the MSM cannot report the real number of jobless because there are no soup lines today.....UB are the modern equivalent of the soup lines.
