For five years, the case against Tom DeLay for money laundering through his Texans for a Republican Majority PAC has been seemingly trapped in the Texas courts facing pre-trial appeals. On November 1, it finally made it to trial and today the verdict is in: guilty on both money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The slightly-less-than-humble DeLay lost his majority leadership in Congress after the indictment came down, but he has maintained his claims that this case was politically motivated throughout the entire process right up to defense attorney Dick DeGuerin's closing arguments.
The jury clearly didn't buy his argument and now DeLay is potentially facing life in prison on money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering charges. DeLay is accused of channeling $190,000 in corporate money through his Texans for a Republican Majority PAC in 2002 to aid GOP candidates.

Yes, since he was convicted of a Texas crime, he may be (and can only be) pardoned by the Governor.
You don't get an unlimited supply of peremptory challenges. I think TX is 10, or so. If the jurisdiction is 80% Dem, and you only get 10 challenges - well, you can do the math.
And Rangel only gets a NO NO slap, and continues on.

It was a completely mealy-mouthed, fake, and inappropriate comment. This is a national disgrace, a horrible travesty, and not the time to be pretending not to know. Because anyone on this forum who doesnt know is ten times worse than an idiot.

Appeals won’t clear him “on evidence”; only if the law was not properly followed in the trial. IF he appeals to the Board of Pardons and Paroles, a seven-member paid body appointed by the governor (all Perry appointees) and confirmed by the state Senate, he would have to admit guilt. He may to serve several years before he can appeal to that board. PERRY HAS NO AUTHORITY TO PARDON HIM.
This is why it is different with the GOP has control: Socialists/liberals/communists have thousands non-profits and most of the Universties churning out ideas and pushing agendas for “rule.” Conservatives work and expect a small, retiring, conservative government. The GOP voters are not looking for social engineering, takeovers and big government programs.
Reform would have been great, but again, we don’t have many intellectuals and non-profits focused on expanding freedom only ending it.

This case was a complete travesty and Ronnie Earle is contemptible. Luckily, the judges on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals are now all Republicans, same with the Texas Supreme Court. Austin is the San Fran of Texas.

If he’s given years of prison time, he should pay the fines with laundered money. That would confuse the hell out of the court.
This trial has been politically motivated and a farce IMHO right down to the venue.

You have liberal Dems being caught red-handed doing this type of thing and they walk. They trump up false charges against a patriotic American and try him in a known liberal enclave, and he could get life in prison.

OK, thanks for cluing me in on that.
I’m reading all this stuff that says the appeals court can’t change a “finding of fact.” But what about a case where the jury clearly and definitely makes the wrong decision in the face of all the evidence (often called “jury nullification”)? If the jury clearly makes the wrong decision, then the Appeals court must have some way of overturning such a decision, otherwise many innocent people could be railroaded by heavily biased county prosecutors and biased juries for political reasons. There has to be some way in the law to prevent blatant political persecution. It may be very unusual for the appeals court to overturn this kind of conviction, but I would bet that there’s some way under the law that they can overturn DeLay’s conviction.
