For five years, the case against Tom DeLay for money laundering through his Texans for a Republican Majority PAC has been seemingly trapped in the Texas courts facing pre-trial appeals. On November 1, it finally made it to trial and today the verdict is in: guilty on both money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The slightly-less-than-humble DeLay lost his majority leadership in Congress after the indictment came down, but he has maintained his claims that this case was politically motivated throughout the entire process right up to defense attorney Dick DeGuerin's closing arguments.
The jury clearly didn't buy his argument and now DeLay is potentially facing life in prison on money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering charges. DeLay is accused of channeling $190,000 in corporate money through his Texans for a Republican Majority PAC in 2002 to aid GOP candidates.
How does the “best attorney in Texas” (see post 38) allow a Greenpeace activist in the jury pool in what’s transparently a politically-motivated prosecution?
While its true that Delay could face up to life in prison, he’ll likely get a short sentence or a suspended sentence and probation.

I am not stunned at all. No innocent person wants to go before a jury anywhere. Jurors are biased to the core. The few unbiased people who should be jurors do all they can to get out of being chosen. This is further proof that America “doesn’t work” any more.
I agree with the principle but Delay’s no crook — this trial was a pile of rat feces from start to finish.
The next step is to charge rats with treason and hold trials in deep south states with the death penalty. Let’s see what happens.

One thing I cannot understand is how the Jury got so loaded.
Where was Delay’s attorney when they picked the jury. Did he contest any Juror?
This defendent attorney was supposed to be great shakes, but he allowed a Jury like this?

DeLay’s attorneys tried to get the trial move to El Paso. It was denied, and this will be a part of any appeal.
Travis County is the most liberal spot in Texas. I can’t blame the lawyers for the jury pool. They knew it was a stacked deck.
My husband got his call for Jury Duty yesterday (2nd one...he had to delay the first one)....and he’s planning on being there...but they’ll probably throw him out...too conservative.
So can Perry pardon him? Under what law and whose jurisdiction is he being prosecuted?

Now that is a good idea. Of course, I’m taking you out of context. However, to be serious, this country needs “statesmen” not “politicians” to be in office. So, in one sense I would like to see politics made illegal.
