Also planning to cut COLA’s. We haven’t had a cost of living raise in 2 years. How do you cut nothing?

The part of SS that is federal welfare is what is breaking it. If you NEVER paid in you should never get a dime......period.
That, and not letting Congress spend every dime that goes in would be a great start.

MORE COMING OUT:

* Index the retirement age to longevity — i.e., increase the retirement age to qualify for Social Security — to age 69 by 2075.
* Index Social Security yearly increases to inflation rather than wages.
* Freeze federal worker wage increases through 2014; eliminate 200,000 federal jobs by 2020; and eliminate 250,000 federal non-defense contractor jobs by 2015
* Establish co-pays in the VA medical system and change the co-pays and deductibles for military retirees that remain in that system.
* Eliminate NASA funding for commercial space flight.
* Require the Smithsonian museums to start charging entrance fees and raise fees at the national parks.
* Eliminate funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting — which many conservatives suggested in the wake of the firing of former NPR contributor Juan Williams.
* Reduce farm subsidies by $3 billion per year.

My husband is a GS-11. He doesn’t make anything near $150,000. My husband started at the VA because he wanted to do what he could for the veterans (he is retired military) and make VA care better. Everytime I come onto FR, I feel like it is a sin that my husband is a federal employee.

What constantly amazes me is there are some allegedly on ‘our side’ of the political divide that assert Social Security isn’t failing. Despite all evidence to the contrary.

I actually agree with both of these suggestions. Of course, there’s zero chance either one is going to happen any time soon.

Me too. I'm shocked at how many progressives there are on FR who disagree. :-)

Well, I agree it’s unpopular but don’t we recognize social security must be cut in some way? If conservatives won’t cut any of this stuff, savings will come from where?

Hello....

SS is OUR money.

Cut welfare.

Cut subsidies.

Cut bailouts

Cut the education budget.

Cut lavish benefits for career politicians.

Cut any number of useless bureaucracies and handout programs.

The list is almost endless....

Everyone needs to work harder and pay more taxes so Oboma and the federal unionized army of useless bureucrats can live in luxory.

Get ready for the anarchy coming when thirty plus years of exporting jobs combines with 40 plus years of importing uneducated socialists of every color and religion to rip the USA apart just as planned

Come quickly Lord Jesus

I know I will get beat up for this, however I will say it. I always looked at the mortgage deduction for taxes as a subsidy for the real estate market. The mortgage deduction gives an incentive to buy vs rent. Quite frankly in this market that may not be a good thing,we are experiencing the problems with record numbers of people who shouldn’t own homes. People are against subsidies to farming and other programs, but in a way, this is the same thing.

The problem of course is if you take away the exemption, you are putting a big nail in the real estate market and thus the economy at a time it cannot afford it.

I personally say flat tax and get rid of deductions.

I don’t get that.. I work for a for-profit company, and I don’t make that much.. and I’m paying their salary ! meanwhile, I doubt I can ever retire.

And if you ever do retire, dems are going to make sure your social security is lower... are you totally charmed with them yet?

I don't understand why people for for democrats...

If I am not mistaken the family reunification act allows family members from abroad to come to the US and collect social security even tho they never worked a day in this country.

Across the Board cut of 10% of all Federal outlays. Followed by 10% cut of operating commissions and agencies. the massive herd of Federal Acronyms needs to be culled.

Aiming too low. Britain is cutting 20% and 500,000 government workers.

10% will only get you less than a third of what is necessary. The deficit was about 37% of the entire federal budget last year.

Great ideas. Toss in the elimination of the global tax, get out of the UN, stop the greenie movement and burn more clean coal, drill, build refineries, remove all the absurd govt regulations from big corporations and businesses, stop all immigration both legal and illegal and stop giving money to countries that detest us such as Yemen. Reinstate LEGAL immigration to our country AFTER our economy is solvent which could be a long time
